Two things more reporting should do regarding emulators:

  1. Make it clear they are not always straightforward to use. Many people seem to assume Delta will be Spotify for old Nintendo games when it’s more like VLC. RetroArch is… let’s say not an app with the best UX.

  2. Explain that, yes, these old games aren’t like new games. I just saw one person grumbling that old PlayStation games are a bit rubbish and not something they’d want to spend time with. OK… maybe emulation isn’t for you then.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell It’s a bit like old films right? Oh. It’s black and white. And delivery is a bit stilted. And there’s no sex. There’s more to art than transposition.

Quick question: what are you hoping for Apple to reveal at WWDC this year? I’m writing a piece and it’d be useful to get insight into improvements devs and anyone else hopes Apple makes or new things it introduces (and how they are achieved).

I nice piece by Keith Stuart over at the Guardian on old games mags. Worryingly, I actually agree with most of his list, and even the order it’s in. That has to be a first.

@craiggrannell I’d place Maximim higher up, Games TM lower down, add The One, split out Crash and Zzap!64, drop Edge down to 2nd or 3rd and place Zzap!64 at top. Not for nostalgic reasons. Crash came first but Zzap!64 got it spot on after issue 3 and ended up influencing Crash in return.

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox Guys. Just hooked up a new mini PC running ChimeraOS (steam is based) to the ambilight Philips TV. So cracked out Polybius. I love it. It’s a rush but always ends badly. But then I realised, warp gates…. The pace is mine to set. Ridiculous really. What a concept huh?

@craiggrannell Popped the Beelink out of the box yesterday. It’s the new variant with 1 HDMI and DisplayPort. Crucial RAM is nice but the NVME is unbranded. But ….. chimeraOS went on like a charm. Wi-Fi is bloody good - better than the HP for sure. It comes out of the box set with the max 25W TDP in the bios. And …… drumroll …….. it is pretty much silent. Will pop CEMU on it shortly and see how BotW and MK8 perform.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell When Robtech reviewed it a year or so ago, it was two HDMI and the base was a pain to remove. The new variants added a pull tab making it easy. It was also set (I believe) at a 15W TDP. So BotW in windows as 1080p was mid 20s fps. About WiiU level. He confirmed he only tested everything at stock back then. So the HP manages a locked 30fps at 720p. And that’s native Linux CEMU. So fingers crossed the Beelink will at least equal that and be quieter.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell The telling point is it still appears on his top 5 always winning the value option. It punches well above its weight. And is tiny. Seriously, it’s more than the 233 I paid but only £40 more.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell soooo WiiU. Breath of the wild sticks at 20fps default. Disappointed. Then jumped to CEMU, enabled the graphics packs and FPS++. It now runs around 40 fps. And the Beelink is still silent. So far better than expected.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell ha. Yes I know. But I’m just sharing this experience with someone who (doesn’t) care(s). It’s crazy the advances in WiiU on Linux and how Vulkan and Linux perform better on AMD. Some folk may have to revise their best buys.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell it’s madness really. In the mini space (apple aside) everyone was chasing latest chipsets. Yet most were recycled laptop parts. But hardware is only one part of the puzzle. The software progress is incredible - yet favours a specific hardware config. But progress it is. And most importantly it’s fun. I’m in danger of these things being a BotW/MK8/Llamasoft machine. So be it.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell yeah. I’m happy with that though. Just picking a few games I’ll play and adding them to the Steam library is great. EmulationStation is cool but holy crao, who needs a 100s of entries on a system you’ll never play.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell indeed. Some time ago I realised that “the entire SNES USA collection” on the RP3+ was a mistake. So curated that, MD and the handhelds down to 20 max each. And I still play less than 10% of those.

@craiggrannell Heads up. Check a couple of reviews - Robtech’s last top 5. This is no 5 now and was no 1 last year. https://amzn.eu/d/0VgMBDz buy from Beelink or same from Amazon with a discount to be applied at checkout. https://amzn.eu/d/cBlHqWN

@craiggrannell just ordered one. £233 is a stupid price for a Wii u capable almost silent mini.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell ChimeraOS primarily.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell The HP was a little funky the other week so it has made me think about longevity.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Chimera has proved itself to be solid so far. Something very quiet that plays my Steam collection and can play the WiiU and down games I actually want to play is a no brainier. Especially as for 233, that’s 16GB RAM and a 500GB Nvme. Plus a windows license. So you’re looking at (with no research) the box itself for around £120. Mad really.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Emudeck. Same as SteamDeck. It installs all the emus configured with controls and es-de for front end. Honestly it’s no trouble. Less than android.

If an iTunes for arcade games suddenly appeared, how much would you pay for an average arcade ROM (say, for games like Dig Dug, Robotron, Bubble Bobble, Wizard of Wor, Gyruss, Space Invaders, etc.) you could subsequently legally use as you please, forever?

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell $5 seems fair enough. But I wouldn’t use it on iOS. If a GOG place existed for name packaged Roms, sure I’d be all over that.

marksemczyszyn, to random
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Tip. An AMD based mini PC plus a primary ChimeraOS drive makes for a very nice, immediate gaming experience on a tv.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell hmm. This updated version may have issues booting Linux. I’ll read up some more. The original M5 had no issues. Bloody good price though.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Nah. Easy. NX mode in bios is like a secure boot thing now. Disable it and you can install what you want. I’m going to price up some RAM later and maybe pull the trigger while it’s on flash sale. Will be a better performer than the HP.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell So. It might be a little long in the tooth. So my gut says stick with the HP and review in a few months. You should keep an eye on Robtech on YT. You’ll find your almost perfect under tv box at some point. But deffo AMD is the best way forward.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell ha. I know. I get it. But after Batocera killed itself, I realised I didn’t use that pc for anything other than firing up windows to play steam for a bit - like 30 mins a time - or a quick RetroBat session. So there had to be a better way forward. And there was. Just watch the techdweeb video for the state of how things are now.

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell That’s what I was looking for. Appliance grade device. Batocera was ok for me till I updated 38 to 39. Then it died. And I figured by bother messing around with it to restore - which I could. But it’s time I couldn’t be bothered to give. Steam just works. Unless you fiddle with it.
