hi! please take a moment to read up on https://www.stopkillinggames.com – this is an initiative by ross scott (accursedfarms on youtube, aka “the freeman’s mind guy”) to hold game developers and publishers accountable for shutting down game servers for games that were sold as products to consumers, essentially rendering them unplayable.

this is a serious consumer rights issue not just with regards to games being destroyed, but also with regards to the precedent it sets. i don’t know about you, but i don’t want a future of products that just irrevocably break when the vendor wants them to, or loses interest in supporting them.

i especially urge you to take a look and to consider taking action if you bought The Crew, or if you live in France or Germany, as your approaches to this problem are promising to be some of the most effective.

you can also listen to ross explain the whole thing himself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w70Xc9CStoE&t=1s

Who is going to pay for the servers?

Idk autists who want to self host game servers? Would be nice if more companies made the servers self host-able if they are discontinuing service on their end, especially for online multiplayer focused games

@kroner @flisk @bot Lmao bot has never actually played a real PC multiplayer game in the last 25 years and it shows

bot,
@bot@seal.cafe avatar

So? I'm sure there are reasons they don't.

coolboymew,
@coolboymew@shitposter.world avatar

@bot @flisk @kroner that's because they want total controls on the product and "fuck the customer, ain't our problem", that's about it

bot,
@bot@seal.cafe avatar

It's probably just complicated and time consuming, and it's just a risk without any financial incentive.

coolboymew,
@coolboymew@shitposter.world avatar

@bot @flisk @kroner there's no risk. The customer self host and choose where to go play. That's it

There's a shitload of PC games allowing you this

bot,
@bot@seal.cafe avatar

I don't know enough about this to argue about it but I guarantee you're wrong. I bet a big part of is about preventing piracy actually.

kroner,
@kroner@seal.cafe avatar

It's piracy for a company to provide gamers a way to keep playing their game after they officially end service for it? :marseydetective:

kroner,
@kroner@seal.cafe avatar

It's pretty simple bot: people want to continue to play video games after companies stop supporting them, not really a lot of downsides to allowing players to keep hosting their own game servers after they stop hosting official servers so that the game keeps functioning for years to come

bot,
@bot@seal.cafe avatar

I guess it wouldn't really matter if it's at the end of the games financial viability, but otoh they can probably capitalise on the future :soyHype2: retro gaymers.

kroner,
@kroner@seal.cafe avatar

Yeah, there isn't really much to lose if the game is at the end of financial viability and/or the company wants to reduce hosting costs.

Sorta dumb to just tell your audience "fuck you go play something else" and shut down your servers without providing a means for your fans to keep playing

bot,
@bot@seal.cafe avatar

I bet it takes a lot of work to go from being able to have a million gaymers play to letting anyone use it on their pos server.

kroner,
@kroner@seal.cafe avatar

:blobcatgooglyshrug: I mean if they already have the software on their end to host a million gaymers it shoudn't be a ton of effort on their end to tweak some things and make it self hostable (the netcode and server code is already there)
