🆕 blog! “Thoughts on building an NFC reader for the Framework laptop”

The Framework laptop has several little slots which can be used be used to expand the functionality of the laptop. They convert the internal USB-C ports into a different sort of port. For example, Framework sells an official HDMI card and Ethernet card: But the community have bu…

@Edent You're probably going to want the antenna to stick out of the case at least a little bit? The expansion slots sit underneath the mid plate (see photo) which is a solid bit of metal and might block NFC signals.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@steve cheers for the photo. Looks like it'll stick out about 2-4cm. Which should be good for the antenna, but might make it prone to damage.

Hmmm. Are those internal ports for the side-pads USB?

@steve interesting! Any idea how many there are? It looks like there might be spares if the trackpad is shifted to the side?

@steve@prattle.org.uk avatar

@Edent You can see a picture of the mid plate here: https://frame.work/gb/en/products/16-mid-plate-kit

There are five USB connections — the three at the left and the two at the right. These are used for keyboard and other modules in the top row.

The remaining three connections in the middle are not USB, they are I2C for the three possible locations of the trackpad module in the bottom row.

The spacers that go next to the trackpad don't get USB connections, unfortunately.

@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@steve ah. So I resume the numpad only uses one of those connectors when inserted. Does that mean the other one is free for me to wire into?
Sorry if that's a daft question!

steve,
@steve@prattle.org.uk avatar

@Edent Electrically free, but mechanically very difficult to get to!

Here's a picture of the underside of my number pad module. You can see the indentations made on the black insulating rectangle by the pins of the unused USB connection.

The number pad is held in place by strong magnets either side of the connectors on the mid plate — they pull it down with quite a lot of force.

@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@steve more force just mean less soldering 🙂

@Edent The USB-C expansion ports might not be your only option. Framework 16 also lets you mess with the keyboard and the panels either side of it. Might be a similar form factor to that blue board you mentioned with the “honking great antenna”.
You never know, it might be easier to solder for that I/O interface than a USB-C plug, BUT I’ve not researched that area at all so I could be talking nonsense.
Have you ordered a Framework 13 or 16?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@danielthepope That's a good point!
I've got the 16 inch coming - but with a numberpad rather than the side panels.
I'll see if I can squeeze it inside anywhere 🙂

danielthepope,
@danielthepope@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent I just looked up if you can get the panels either side of the touchpad to do anything fancy. Apparently not :(

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@danielthepope I wonder if the space is thick enough to house a slim circuit? Can't wait to try it out!

@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

I'm still waiting for my @frameworkcomputer laptop to ship.
In the meantime ⬆ is my attempt to find some components for an integrated NFC reader.

alphasixtyfive,
@alphasixtyfive@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent @frameworkcomputer 13 or 16 inch?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@alphasixtyfive Maximum size!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

OK! First #NFC component acquired!

Tiny little board. Still too long for a #FrameWork expansion card - but perhaps thin enough to slot in somewhere else?

MicroUSB - but works with a USB-C OTG cable. So I'd either need to hardwire it in, or learn to solder.

I don't know what those debug pins do.

Side on view of the board. very little protruding from it.

alphasixtyfive,
@alphasixtyfive@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent At least halh of it is the antena I reckon. It would be interresting to fit this along with a small LCD screen into a "numpad" module.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@alphasixtyfive
Have a read of my blog post above 😃

I'm wondering about fitting it next to the trackpad.

alphasixtyfive,
@alphasixtyfive@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent Indeed :) My first print for FW13 was the snack drawer.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@alphasixtyfive I may need to commission you to print one for me 🙂

@Edent just pick a colour! I have black and .... white.

thisisaaronland,

@Edent I am very interested in this / the back story of my interest is https://www.aaronland.info/weblog/2022/06/17/expectations/#usf

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@thisisaaronland nifty!
You may also be interested in my QRpedia project from a few years back.

Still running in some museums, I think.

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@Edent @thisisaaronland wait, you were involved in QRpedia? (rubs forehead) that sure raised some weird hackles at WMF at the time.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@luis_in_brief yes, I created it. I don't remember any hackles at the time - but it was a good few years ago!

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@Edent I may be confusing it with a different QR code project around that time? WMF was very unhappy because it routed through a third party service that captured some PII without being transparent about it.

Also, reasonably at the time though in retrospect hilariously wrong, many people at WMF thought QR codes were a fad that would pass.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@luis_in_brief
We were a 3rd party service, but didn't log any PII.
In the end, we transfered the domain and project to WMF UK.

stevekennedyuk,

@Edent should be able to get smaller NFC stuff, pins seem to be a USB connector i.e. just no socket so can we wired internally to something the board is in

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@stevekennedyuk if you know of a smaller board, please let me know 🙂
