edward,

Today I'm travelling by rail from #Gothenburg to #Hamburg with a change in #Copenhagen.

Here's my photos of #GothenburgCentralStation

edward,

Okay, let's go.

@edward Looks very modern and fresh, even if the concept of "rubber nose" trains with a driver compartment that is hinged and turned out of the way when two units are coupled is quite old, from the late 1980s.

edward,

@tml My train joined with another train at Helsingborg. The train staff did what you described, they folded away the driver's controls made the compartment a passageway.

edward,

Coat hangers on the train. Very enlightened.

edward,
edward,
edward,

My train is travelling along the coast. I keep getting glimpses of the sea.

edward,

The Wi-Fi isn't working on this train, DHCP fails. I've been relying on 4G instead.

edward, (edited )

We just crossed the Øresund Bridge. I was very impressed. It is a highlight of the journey.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Another high point (also literally) will be the Rendsburger Hochbrücke https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendsburg_High_Bridge

edward,

@tml You were right, it was awesome!

edward,

Copenhagen

edward,

Copenhagen Central Station

image/jpeg

edward,

I'm on the second leg of the journey, to .

There are drinks stations on the train with tea, coffee and flasks of hot water.

edward,

I've crossed the border and I'm in Germany now. The third country of my journey.

edward, (edited )

My train just did the Rendsburg Loop followed by the Rendsburg High Bridge over the Kiel Canal.

The loop is a spiral railway for the train to gain enough height for the bridge.

I was able to see the bridge before the train used it to cross the canal.

edward,

My train has arrived in Hamburg. That's it for rail travel today. Now off to my hotel.

#TrainTravel #fossnorth

edward,

After four nights in an over the top hotel, I'm going to try something basic.

This is my room for the night. It is my first time in a capsule hotel.

#CapsuleHotel #CAB20 #fossnorth #Hamburg

GhileneH,

@edward
Wow ! Please, keep us posted on your experience.
Good night !

@edward that looks interesting and tagging @mfeilner

marco,

@edward

Do you have your own bathroom/toilet?

edward, (edited )

@marco No, showers are in the basement. There are people walking to and from the showers in dressing gowns.

Madagascar_Sky,
@Madagascar_Sky@mastodon.social avatar

@edward Where does the mystery ladder above your bed take you?

edward,

@Madagascar_Sky Good question. There is a mirror above the bed. The ladder you can see reflected is for hanging clothes on.

edward, (edited )

The showers are in the basement. There are people walking to and from the showers in dressing gowns provided by the hotel.

#CapsuleHotel #CAB20 #Hamburg

edward,

The hotel has self check-in. The room key is a bracelet.

edward,
chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@edward is there an elevator or is it stairs-only? Just so I know if I end up booking a room there. I'm usually okay with stairs but not always.

edward,

@chillicampari There is an elevator, it goes down to the showers and up to the roof terrace on the top floor.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@edward cool and thank you :)

edward,

I'm hanging out in the hotel lounge. They're playing some pumping music.

This photo is from earlier. It is busier now.

edward,
edward, (edited )

Moin moin! I've checked out of the hotel and I'm back at Hauptbahnhof to catch a train to . This is my first train of the journey that doesn't cross an international border.

edward,
edward,

My train is delayed by 30 minutes. We're stopped at .

edward,

Now delayed 45 minutes. The DB navigator app gives the reason as "catenary repairs".

I'm nervous about making the connection in for the train.

edward,

One hour delay now. Things are looking dicey.

edward,

The DB navigator app says my train will arrive in at 13:46 and my next train leaves at 13:42 on the same platform.

edward,

Deutsche Bahn sent me an e-mail: "Your connection in Köln Hbf will not be reached". They have given me an alternative plan.

edward,

We've stopped again. Not in a station this time.

richardemepham,

@edward nice view though eh.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Will you miss your Eurostar, or did you plan to stay the night in Brussels anyway, and will now just arrive later there?

edward,

@tml I'm going to arrive in Brussels at 17:35.

My Eurostar leaves at 17:56.

I have 21 minutes to change trains. I'm not sure if they'll allow it.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Good luck! (Is that the last Eurostar? If not, possibly they might try to fit you into a later, DB and Eurostar do have some kind of agreement.)

edward,

@tml I got off the ICE 107 at Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof and got on the IC 148 which is meant to go to Amsterdam Centraal. From there I can get a train to Brussels and I should arrive at 17:08.

However, this train has problems. The onboard Wi-Fi says "Notarzteinsatz auf der Strecke" which translates as "Emergency medical service on the route".

It says "Halt entfällt" which is "no stop" next to "Amsterdam Centraal".

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Ouch. Hope the person who needed the medical attention is well. (Although I fear it means a suicide.) And seems that you will have a bonus hotel night somewhere, apparently the train will terminate at Bad Bentheim...

edward,

I got off the ICE 107 at Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof and got on the IC 148 which was meant to go to Amsterdam Centraal, but there is an accident on the line and the train was cancelled. Now I'm trying to use local trains to cross the Netherlands and get to Brussels.

edward,
edward,

I'm at Hengelo in the Netherlands. This wasn't on the plan. My journey now includes seven countries.

edward, (edited )

There's a party happening in the Netherlands. Lots of people are dressed in orange or they have flags painted on their cheeks.

I looked up what's going on, it's Koningsdag or King's Day, a national holiday.

edward,

A tiny train arrived at Hengelo and lots of people got on. It was packed.

image/jpeg

edward,

I changed trains at Zutphen. This one is a double-decker intercity. Much nicer and less busy.

@edward looks fancy! Safe travels!

@edward I’ve been on that model of train too. It’s a nice one!

edward,
edward,
edward,

I'm on a train from Breda to Brussel-Zuid/Midi.

Google Maps says I can change onto a Thalys train at Antwerpen-Centraal to get to Brussels faster.

Is that allowed?

edward,

My sixth train of the day. This train is taking me to Brussels Midi.

edward,

The train has crossed the border.

I'm in Belgium, my third country for the day. Country number five of the journey.

mormegil,

@edward If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium! Oh, wait, it’s Thursday!

edward,

I've changed trains again. Trying to reach Brussels Midi 10 minutes sooner.

This time I'm on the top deck of a double decker.

edward,

I missed my original , but I made it to the next one with minutes to spare. They let me on.

If there's no more problems then I'll get home one hour later than planned.

edward,

The Eurostar has crossed the border, I'm in France. Fourth country of the day. Sixth country of the journey. This is the only country where I won't make a stop.

edward,

My #Eurostar arrived early, which is good. I was a little worried about my last connection. Now I'm at King's Cross station on the Cambridge train, I'm waiting for it to leave.

#TrainTravel #fossnorth #LondonKingsCross #CambridgeStation #CambridgeUK

edward,

My train to Cambridge just left Kings Cross. This is my 9th train today, the 11th and final train of the journey.

edward,

Today's train journeys

  1. Hamburg -> Osnabrück
  2. Osnabrück -> Rheine
  3. Rheine -> Hengelo
  4. Hengelo -> Zutphen
  5. Zutphen -> Breda
  6. Breda -> Mechelen
  7. Mechelen -> Brussels Midi
  8. Brussels Midi -> London St Pancras
  9. London Kings Cross -> Cambridge

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Did you in the end win anything by not continuing on the (severely delayed) train from Hamburg to Köln and instead going through the Netherlands?

edward,

@tml No.

If I'd stayed on the delayed train I would've arrived at Brussels Midi by 17:35. My was at 17:56, It was too close, I don't think they would've let me on.

With my trek through the Netherlands I arrived at Brussels Midi at 18:15.

Either way I think I would've been on the same Eurostar. My journey was a lot more fun than just sitting on a delayed train.

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Did you have to negotiate hard with Eurostar staff to get your reservation exchanged, or did you just have to show up and explain briefly, and it was sorted?

edward, (edited )

@tml Very brief. They didn't need to look at my DB ticket.

I think that other people with the same difficulties had probably arrived before me.

There was a couple right behind me with the same problem, they had missed their because of problems with DB.

edward,

@tml I had to agree to be downgraded from Standard Premier to Standard.

Crofton,

@edward thanks for sharing this adventure.

richard5mith,
@richard5mith@mastodon.online avatar

@edward Impressive.

Madagascar_Sky,
@Madagascar_Sky@mastodon.social avatar

@edward Wow, how did you get access? Did you touch any of the buttons?

edward,

@Madagascar_Sky The door was open.

Madagascar_Sky,
@Madagascar_Sky@mastodon.social avatar

@edward Is this a security lapse or a 'we trust each other ' deal?

edward,

@Madagascar_Sky I guess you need a key to start the train. Not sure how much you can do without one.

Madagascar_Sky,
@Madagascar_Sky@mastodon.social avatar

@edward Comapred to where I am from, this simple act gives me a sense of trust and an ownership in the system.

Cool trip !

tml,
@tml@urbanists.social avatar

@edward Sweden is a good example of functional and well working railway liberalisation. 1) The incumbent state-owned operator. 2) Open Access operators. 3) Services run by regional administrations. All (partially) competing.

But for some reason, whenever you dare to suggest breaking the de-facto incumbent operator's monopoly here in Finland, the knee-jerk reaction is "but, but, look at the UK". (That "everybody" knows is a mess.) Even though next-door Sweden shows how to do it.
