as a person who was subjected to predatory lending by a diploma mill that ballooned to, at its height, $101k in debt
"Joe Biden forgave a bunch of loans that aren't your loans and people should know about this achievement" is the most fundamentally unserious bit of centrist cheerleading I've ever fucking heard lmaooooooo
people will be excited by loan forgiveness when Biden forgives THEIR loans and if he can't deliver that they should not care
@maslowsneeds listen, a) free Palestine, b) please don’t be inserting me into a pile of tags I didn’t ask for, I’m not looking for that kind of situation here
But it's also fair for Biden to try to make it clear his administration is trying to forgive as much student debt as Republicans will let slip through the cracks in the barrier wall they've erected to prevent it.
I was told by the Centrist Vote Blue No Matter Who Squad that we NEEDED Biden because HE ALONE could navigate the legislative gridlock to deliver on his many promises
I was told THIS WAS THE GUY who could make Washington work, that his long history of complicity in the broken systems would now turn around to be alacrity in their manipulation
@danilo@CassandraZeroCovid I am seeing similar complaints across the US and UK and Canada against centrists who are hamstrung by following the system as it exists versus the lawless approach the far right is happy to take.
If the supposed solution is to emulate the far right and tear up the law then perhaps that is the end of democracy globally as neither left nor right believe in it any longer. I say this with views very far from the centrists but with a deep concern for democracy.
@danilo@CassandraZeroCovid I am not sure either. I am trying to read between the lines of your post but I am likely doing so poorly.
I suppose on this specific issue you raised I am not sure what can be done when there is a corrupt US Supreme Court that will issue absurd rulings such as blocking blanket student debt forgiveness. One option would be to ignore the court and do it anyway which would be lawless. Though producing an outcome I support it would worsen the crisis of democracy.
I don't have a lot left of that burden but I was still curious about the forgiveness options as they do exist now
they are of course means tested within an inch of their fucking lives, and parsing the conditions basically requires an ivy league degree and no less than one hour of your life to research your particular case
as written, I APPEARED to qualify!
but no, I was informed not so much. No one needs to be excited about this unless they got hooked up
Anyway, the thing that drives me up the wall about the whole “the American people aren't being TOLD about Biden's achievements” narrative:
The American people are eating shit.
The American people are enduring surges in housing costs. The American people are seeing entire states turn into death traps for anyone who might become pregnant.
The American people are seeing rising homelessness.
This is a precarious moment in history and you're mad they're not being better gaslit?
It's objectively true that we cannot sustain another round of far-right arson in the federal government. People will die, people will be interned, people will be deported, people will be scapegoated and subjected to stochastic terrorism.
And I think if you want to avert that terrible outcome, the most effective way to do it is NOT giving Joe Biden a Gentleman's C on his first four years
But to demand commitments that prevent a lazy rightward drift (as already happened on immigration)
