All of you who use laptops as your workstations do you take care of its and how? Do you limit charging at 80%?

marcroberts,
@marcroberts@mastodon.social avatar

@darth Yep, I use AlDente with my MBP, limited to 80%.
Apple’s intelligent charging, isn’t.

@marcroberts
So it makes sense not to overcharge, right? Unless you need 100 that day.

@darth Yea, I limit the charge to 80%. Although, I’ve only been able to do that on my current on, all previous laptops I’ve had couldn’t do that, so I let it charge to 100% all the time. Only had one issue with battery issues, that had physical bulging/growth issues leading to a replacement.

@Zak8022
Is your current laptop a ThinkPad?

dragmine149,
@dragmine149@silversword.online avatar

@darth I try to limit charging the battery to 80% which sometimes i go over when i'm not paying attention. (Whilst gaming, i don't normally care about battery charge that much)

I'm supposed to have software built into my laptop to limit the battery charging to 80%, however that doesn't work on linux (it does but only for a while after i've booted into windows and used the software on there)

I do normally let the battery run below 10% as well.

@dragmine149 did you try TLP on Linux?

dragmine149,
@dragmine149@silversword.online avatar

@darth didn't know about it before today, have installed it since so hopefully it will help.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@dragmine149 edit tlp.conf and find a battery charge limiter in there. For me it works but I only tried on one laptop so far.

dragmine149,
@dragmine149@silversword.online avatar

@darth What settings do i need to change? The file looked correct to me (default config file provided) yet it hasn't seemed to work yet

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@dragmine149 I changed this and it works for me.

dragmine149,
@dragmine149@silversword.online avatar

@darth Thanks (totally didn't skip over this part when i was skim readinging...)

I did have to change STOP_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0 to 1 to get it to work, but now i can watch my computer charge to 79%

sorg,
@sorg@mstdn.games avatar

@darth when i had laptop it was plugged in 99% of the time. For 3+ years that i had it battery life was solid.
When it comes to phone I never charge it beyond 85%

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@sorg my laptop is at 80% health after 2.5 years so I am wondering what did I do wrong? It was on charger at 100% most of the time…

sorg,
@sorg@mstdn.games avatar

@darth depends on the brand and quality.
Like on phones, 200€ phone wont have same quality and battery life as 1000€ one.

Can your replace battery?

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@sorg I think the battery is replacable on most laptops except maybe Surface and similar. But yeah, mine can be replaced but it is not that bad yet. I can get 4 hours out of it, that’s fine….
