As a human rights activist, I cannot remain silent about the alarming situation faced by people deprived of their liberty. Overcrowding and overpopulation in prisons not only violate human dignity, but also make it impossible to guarantee minimum living conditions.

The lack of effective access to legal aid and justice reflects a system that seems to forget that we are all subjects of rights, even behind bars. It is imperative that civil society, the media, trade unions and political parties raise their voices and demand substantial changes.

Health in prisons is another critical issue that cannot be overlooked. The lack of adequate medical services, from prevention to emergency care and real access to medicines, is a condemnation to a life of suffering and, in too many cases, a premature death. Furthermore, education and vocational training, fundamental pillars for social reintegration, are in a deplorable state or non-existent in many of these centres.

The safety of both inmates and staff is under constant threat, exacerbated by violence and drug trafficking. Privacy, respect for dignity, access to culture, science and the arts, and freedom of worship are often ignored, further undermining the humanity of those detained.

I urge all sectors of our society to unite in the struggle to improve the living conditions of people in state custody. We must advocate for policies that not only meet international human rights standards, but also promote the dignity, reintegration and respect of every individual, regardless of their legal status. The proximity of prisons to inmates' homes and the fight against ill-treatment and abuse of authority must be immediate priorities.

Together, we can and must promote a prison system that focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment, a system that reflects the values of justice and humanity that we all deserve.
