    Lee_Holmes,

@lcamtuf I like the SQFMI Watchy "kinda" smart watch because it lets me design my own watch faces.

@lcamtuf connectivity and payments when going on runs (don't need to bring phone or wallet, but can still buy a coffee, be reached, etc.)

@againsthimself @lcamtuf @alethe told me a really hilarious story last year in sweden during hackcon about how she was able to use her watch as a phone, dick tracy style, when her phone was unavailable and i think that functionality is pretty rad, but i just flatly dont trust apple. i wonder if the garmin fenix series of watches can do similar

    aejs,

@lcamtuf i'm wearing a smartwatch or a fitness band for the last decade. Starting with an awesome #Pebble and switched to a Xiomi Mi Band. The most used feature are the notifications, my phone is most of the time in a do not disturb mode and on my watch I can get all notifications.

    cmgreen,

@lcamtuf heart rate monitor for cycling was my original use case. It’s not the best but.. it’s always there. Really helps to see your resting HR decline over time training (or notice when you are training too hard). Didn’t realize it wouldn’t work with cycling computer in outdoor bike so I have a dedicated hr monitor now.

Apple health’s rings aren’t very useful as a daily indicator.

I would have returned it and switched out but at the same time I had okta 2fa on my watch too. Such a better experience than opening up the phone without getting sucked into distraction.

It’s also useful to send kids a text from my wrist while cooking.

    remote camera trigger.

Loudness monitor for concerts. I bring earplugs on keychain. It’s nice to have confirmation I don’t need to use them.

    “Find my phone” button.

Apple Maps directions uses a unique haptic for left and right turns. Nice mostly being able to walk/drive without narration.

Apple Watch is miserable for sleep tracking. Needs daily charging.

Nothing essential but can help spend less time in a phone.

    ninkosan,

@lcamtuf honestly it’s mostly just telling me if someone’s calling because I leave my phone on silent all the time.

    howelloneill,

    @lcamtuf exercise tracking

    roasty,

@lcamtuf I use it as a point of motivation to do "trackable" physical activities. Moving from a much more physical job into tech led to some unwanted outcomes and knowing I haven't done anything that I could track is a nice mental pointer.

    riskybusiness,

@lcamtuf I bought one for my 80yo mother as a safety device. If she has a fall it will call emergency services. If she’s immobilised she can message me etc. But I wear mechanical watches because they’re just cool little machines.

    wikiyu,

@lcamtuf i dont need to take (too big!) smartphone with me. Just watch to check time, and if needed receive msg/sms or call ...

    jahanson,

@lcamtuf I used to use one because I left my phone at my desk when I was making rounds around campus and I wanted to see any important calls or notifications. Also the health features were a bonus.

  • jahanson,

@lcamtuf I generally like the “year in review” approach. I use it and don’t try to make my moneys worth or treat it as a toy. I just let it log and review monthly or yearly.
