Just found out the hard way that you can't individually set the language of footnotes in #MicrosoftWord

If I set the footnote on the first page which is in English, the footnote on the second page (which is in German) will be set to English as well.

Now it suddenly worked. I have no idea what I did differently (apart that I was trying to show it to a colleague). Not sure if this is better or worse 😠
