I really need to find a new #SMS app for #Android. I used to use #Signal, and sure, it didn't mean any better security or #privacy for the normal messages, but at least everything was together, and the layout was quite nice.
I've just been using the built-in Messages app for a while now, and it sucks. I don't like the layout at all, or the constant pop-ups asking me if I want to sign away my privacy to enable some sort of live chat feature (I already said no, damn it!).
So, what's everyone using? I'd especially appreciate recs from #blind and #VisuallyImpaired folks, or something that can be gotten on #FDroid. #AskFedi#AskMastodon
I often find that people do know people who use Threema, but they don't know that those people have Threema already.
This is one thing Signal did better because of using phone numbers and notifying users when any number in their contacts became available on Signal's servers by default.
Maybe we all should offer that we use Threema more often.
@tcely@threemaapp already has the option to do something with syncing contacts, so that if you both have that enabled you can find your contacts who happen to have Threema
Yes, but it's not on by default, and I, like many other people, didn't provide a phone number to Threema.
Therefore, that capability existing isn't as effective as it was for Signal. Being on by default and using information that was not optional had a huge impact even if Signal users often misunderstood how it worked, complained about it, and could turn off the notifications on their device.
It's very useful to have multiple secure ways to contact each other already working.
Personally, I have already been through multiple messenger outages that lasted at least a few hours. They didn't inconvenience me at all because I just switched to a backup method, that still provided good privacy and security.
@Mayana I pretend people who don’t use Signal don’t exist and use the default app for non-humans. It’s been working out pretty OK.
That being said, the issue I used to have with Android SMS apps was that they somehow always wanted to get me to pay for a subscription. I’m looking forward to learning about good alternatives.
