tobigr,

I haven't given any updates on the #NewPipe development lately. Although it might seem that most NewPipe devs have been inactive for some time, a lot has happened behind the scenes. Let's catch up on the past weeks months and take a look into future steps of the NewPipe development.

🧵 1 / 6

tobigr,

The latest NewPipe version 0.25.1 was released at the beginning of April. If you have not done it yet, check out the release notes: https://newpipe.net/blog/pinned/release/newpipe-0.25.0+1/

Shortly after that, we were able to enable reproducible builds again. #fdroid now distributes an APK signed by us and one signed by them. This would not have been possible without the help of the great @fdroidorg team. Many thanks to everybody involved!

🧵 2 / 6

tobigr,

As you might have noticed, we put a warning to not open any more feature PRs for now on our GitHub repo a few weeks ago. NewPipe has been growing for quite some time now. Version v.0.3 was published on 15th Sept 2015. Since then, more than 10.000 commits have been done in the app repo. The extractor was separated from the app and published as standalone library that is now also used by lovely services like #Piped (if you don't know them yet, check them out at https://github.com/TeamPiped/).

🧵 3 / 6

tobigr,

The code base grew steadily, became more and more complex and adding new features became increasingly difficult. We attempted to refactor multiple parts of the code gradually. However, that did not work as good as expected. We therefore have decided that we need to rewrite large parts of the app to update it to the latest Android coding principles and make use of state of the art libraries and techniques.

🧵 4 / 6

tobigr,

The problem is that none of us has done such a big rewrite in their short time as developer.
We therefore need for feedback and help! We have listed our ideas and plans in detail on GitHub:
https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/discussions/10118
Some open source projects have failed their rewrites, got stuck and vanished after no development happened for too long. If you have experience with rewriting a whole project, please give us feedback on our plans!
