Man this is absolutely weird. I posted an Instagram link from #MonaApp earlier and it didn’t appear in the timeline. Posted again, didn’t appear. I get told (by a friend) that it is visible. I don’t even see the link(s) on my profile. Tried the Trunks Masto app, still can’t see them. HOWEVER I then downloaded the official Mastodon app and lo and behold I can see both links. What the heck is going on? A config setting somewhere to not show Insta links? @MonaApp any ideas? See screenshots.

@dhrystone You might need to check your timeline filter and custom mute items.

@MonaApp No, it's still borked. I can see both posts on my timeline using Mastodon web. I can't see them in my profile at all in Mona using my (the same) profile. If I flip to ANOTHER of my profiles on the same masto instance in Mona I can look at my first account and see the posts there fine. I have two accounts in my block list, neither of them are related to instagram. Timeline filter has everything checked so should be able to see everything. I have 7 accounts on my mute list, none are insta. Is there a way to clear cache or something?

If it helps, links to the posts are here:

One of my masto friends commented on one of the posts. When I use Mona with my Dhrystone profile, I can see his comment. But normally you can scroll up to see the original post. I can't do that - his comment is literally the first in the thread. See screenshot in next comment.

@MonaApp So if I click directly on the two links that I posted in my comment above, they load fine in Mona. And when I was corresponding last night I was in the car and I briefly saw the image when replying to a comment on it. I can't see that now. Something in Mona (and trunks as well, apparently) is stopping my instagram link from appearing in my timeline when logged into my own account. Visible fine on the web and in official Masto app.

@MonaApp posting this from the Tusker iOS app. I can see the posts fine from here as well.

Ronnie,

@dhrystone I was having the same issues so I’ve moved to another client for awhile.

@MonaApp

@Ronnie @MonaApp Ah geez. With Insta or with different site links?

Ronnie,

@dhrystone I was having issues with just normal posts. It’s not the first time it’s happened. I would go into posts that show they are replies and there would be nothing there. I would go to any other app and the replied to post was there. I think it’s probably always been happening I just wasn’t using other apps to tell. The other day I started using some other apps and I’ve noticed missing posts in Mona.

@MonaApp

Ronnie,

@dhrystone I pointed it out some time ago and it seemed to get fixed but maybe it never actually did. I just get told it my fault so I stopped pointing it out.

@Ronnie @MonaApp It ain’t your fault, my friend. I posted two screen recordings from Mona and the official Mastodon iOS app clearly showing the missing posts in Mona versus them being visible in Masto. Back to… Metatext?! 😞

Ronnie,

@dhrystone Oh I know it’s not my fault, I’m just saying that’s what I’ve been told in the past when pointing it out to Mona. I’ll spend zero time looking into it, about the same amount of time Jonny spends on listening to the people that love his apps.

@Ronnie @MonaApp so things are getting stranger. My two IG post entries are visible on my profile timeline in the Metatext and Tooot apps, but not in Mammoth (or of course Mona). I think theres something wrong with Masto’s API, or how Mona and Mammoth are interpreting the API responses maybe.

Ronnie,

@dhrystone they show up in Ivory.

@Ronnie @MonaApp I sincerely wish that I was able to use Ivory still, it’s my second-favourite Masto client. Unfortunately I’m stuck on iOS 15.4.1 in order to remain jailbroken on my phone, can’t upgrade to the minimum os version to use Ivory. Thanks to Mona being on the fritz I’m now juggling five client apps, fortunately all of which don’t mandate iOS16..

@dhrystone @Ronnie Your post shows fine here, on both local and remote servers. I would suggest double check your mute items. If same thing happen in other apps, then it could also be an issue on Mastodon server.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@MonaApp @Ronnie Created a new account @dhry and posted there. Both posts visible on Mona. However, take a look at your screenshot of my timeline. Both of those links are exactly the same. Do you see how the first one shows “login to Instagram” and the other is the actual link? Is this a clue? Is there a problem for example with your “link preview” system?

MonaApp,
@MonaApp@mastodon.social avatar

@dhrystone Link preview content is provided up-front by the Mastodon server.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@MonaApp @Ronnie @dhry Problem solved and I can see the posts now. It was server-side muting. I had added TC1, TC2, TC3, TC4 and some other similar terms several months ago to mute certain posts that one of the accounts I used to follow was incessantly posting. The Instagram link contained tc4 in it so was being muted out. That’s why some clients were showing the posts and some weren’t - it’s because some honor the server-side mute terms and some don’t. Had to login via Metatext (seemingly the only client that allows you to actually login to the Mastodon settings interface rather than having its own) and that’s where I finally saw and deleted them.

Feature request for Mona: pull in the server side mute terms so that they don’t exist in a location that’s “invisible”, and expose them in the native app settings so they can be modified and deleted as needed.

@Ronnie could this have been your issue?

Will clean up my timeline now.

MonaApp,
@MonaApp@mastodon.social avatar

@dhrystone Thank you for the info. Turns out the reason you can see that post in some other apps is that those apps are not processing server-side filters. I will take a note here.
