Crispius,

#SelfHosting question for folks using masto.host: the ‘Moon’ tier makes the most sense, but in the notes it mentions ‘limited federation’, which concerns me a little. What does that mean? Does it mean that I might not be able to see posts from some of the folks I currently follow, or folks that follow me might not be able to see my posts?

EDIT: to tag @mastohost

@Crispius It's explained in the Pricing page https://masto.host/pricing/ on the bottom under 'about the plans'->'Federation Capacity'.

But it's just something that I added to the plans to explain that processing threads will limit your federation capacity. Example: using the Moon plan if you follow thousands and thousands of remote accounts or enable Federation Relays with a lot of activity, then your timelines may start to suffer delays, meaning posts can take hours to reach your server.

@Crispius But what you can "see" from the people you follow should be the same as a server on a larger plan.

Hope I managed to explain but any doubts or questions, please let me know.

Crispius,

@mastohost thanks, that helps. I’m not too concerned about delays, I’d just hate to think that my reach would be somehow restricted (not that folks really care what I have to say anyhow—lol!) 😀

Crispius,

@mastohost hi again. So my single-user instance has been up for four days, and I’ve now gotten a notification that I’ve exceeded the media storage allowance for the ‘moon’ tier. Is that because of the number of accounts that I follow? (~2k)

Also: when I searched for the hashtag #SelfHosting from my masto.host instance I was not able to find this conversation; is that an example of the ‘limited federation’ capability of the ‘moon’ tier?

Crispius,

@mastohost I’ve already upgraded to the ‘planet’ tier to see how that effects things, I’m just trying to understand the how it all works.

Thanks!

@Crispius Hello! Yes, you are storing media from 2k accounts because Mastodon needs to cache every posts, reply, etc from the users you follow. Plus the avatars/headers/custom emojis from those users.

There is an automated cache deletion in place https://masto.host/re-mastodon-media-storage/ but even then, storing media for 2k users posts for at least a week will require space.

@Crispius Like it says on that link "it’s normal for the media storage to grow very fast in the first days but after the 7 days the growth starts to slow down."

Crispius,

@mastohost thanks for the prompt reply! I’ll keep an eye on things and see how it goes.

@Crispius Regarding the hashtags, search will only return posts that include an hashtag that federated with your server. Meaning from a user that you follow and that made the post after you clicked the follow button.

There is no option on Mastodon to search results from all servers, since there is no central server with everything being posted. Only federation links that are active by follows/following, will get the posts to the server database and in the search results.

Crispius,

@mastohost gotcha. Last question: what is the purpose of relays?

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@Crispius A Federation Relay is a server that shares all public posts across other servers that participate in the relay, no matter if the users are followed or not.

The standard way Mastodon works, federation is user to server. Meaning, if someone in your server follows a remote user, that user will federate with your server. Relays, change that and make the federation server to server, meaning all servers on the relay federate with each other (only public posts).

@Crispius Still, if you are concerned about your server usage, do not enable Federation Relays or your storage will exponentially grow because with a click of a button you could be caching data from many thousands of users. If you want to keep your server usage low, I would suggest that you do not enable relays but it's up to you.

Crispius,

@mastohost copy. Thanks again for the quick replies.

I’m very impressed with the masto.host service as a whole and think it’s a fantastic way for folks with limited technical knowledge to spin up their own instance.

@Crispius Glad to help and happy that you enjoy the service :) Thanks
