Can we please just go back to using smaller wheels and tires?

And now, a rant about wheels and tires that are too big.

johngbell95,

@arstechnica maybe car tyres have come full circle. The Model T Ford had 23 or 24” rims.

As for efficiency, I believe that the BMW i3 has 21” rims for efficiency, but they are significantly narrower than the average SUV tyre.

Those little wheels on a little car like a Mini Cooper made driving at slow speeds a lot of fun.

ben,

@arstechnica There’s a reason I replaced my GTI’s stock 18” wheels with 17” wheels… (I was planning on it anyways but then one of my tires burst from hitting a pothole like 3 days before I actually replaced them).

@arstechnica I strongly support more sidewall. On that alone, pickup trucks and the Jeep Wrangler is a great choice.

leadore,

@arstechnica Amen! Worse mileage and handling, more weight, fragile tires, and silly-looking to boot.

Car and Driver looked at this in 2010 using a Golf and multiple wheel packages:

"What’s immediately apparent from the results is that as the wheel-and-tire packages get larger and heavier, acceleration and fuel economy suffer. Neither is a huge surprise, but we measured a 10-percent drop in fuel economy and a four-percent degradation in 0-to-60-mph acceleration from the 15s to the 19s,.." https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15130598/upsized-wheels-tires/

@arstechnica here you go.

Amen brother!

Tire size was actually a consideration when my wife was looking for an SUV. This was due to the exorbitant cost of tire replacement with the last SUV she had.

I see some of those prices for an ordinary SUV/truck tire and I'm thinking I could get a really good race tire for less!

enhe,

@arstechnica all cars have become too big (in the US)

@arstechnica I replaced the 19” wheels on my Accord Sport w/17” ones and love the way it drives now. I feel like I have more control over the car.

@arstechnica What do we have to do to get Dr. Gitlin over here himself?

@arstechnica Seriously, NO SPARE TIRE!? What are they thinking??

voight,

@arstechnica I would posit that the same could be said for the size of vehicles!

BalooUriza,

@arstechnica You mean back to smaller rims and higher profile tires? Yes please. Sure, it hurts handling but you know what really demolishes any gains low profile tires give? City traffic.
