@dansup @firefish I have also seen weird “unable to decrypt” messages on #Matrix too.

The FAQ on #Element does not provide a solution either: https://element.io/help#encryption9

I wonder if the @element & @matrix teams can investigate this issue‽

My theory: people are using different versions of Matrix & the older version is having issues decrypting or being decrypted by the newer versions.

@darnell @dansup @firefish @element it’s not a version mismatch, but very hard to track down bugs on the 3 respective platforms (web, ios & android). our solution has been to rebuild on a single codebase (rust) and fix the bugs in one place - which is now almost ready; only Element Web/Desktop is yet to migrate.

@matrix @dansup @firefish @element That is great to know! I currently use the iOS/iPadOS apps for Element (I also use Element on the web occasionally as I host there as well).

I only receive the unable to decrypt errors on older encrypted chats that I have not interacted with for over a month (mostly one-on-one chats).

Most active group chats are okay.
