@vmagnin Looks rather healthy for being near extinction, agreed. ;) I haven't done Fortran myself, but according to available information it seems a very well suited language for high performance calculations, so it has plenty of value in scientific and engineering contexts, has it?
I do web dev and I see sometimes similar undervaluating rather healthy languages as PHP, Java or Ruby. Whatever is not the hot lang of the day. ;)

Yes, #Fortran stands for "Formula Translator". It is still one of the major language in the scientific field. But #Python has also been adopted a lot for computation (often using Fortran libraries) on the desktop. #Matlab is also using a lot of Fortran libraries. And there are also #C++ and #Julia.
Being a compiled language, Fortran programs can run fast, as C and C++.
For example, many climate models are written in Fortran or use Fortran libraries.
@vmagnin@r_ivorra So many of the physics models we depend on are written in Fortran. I've worked in both accelerator physics and meteorology, both using a lot of Fortran. They're tried and tested models that have been around for decades. There isn't necessarily a good reason to rewrite them. Sometimes you just wrap new tools around them.
