Meta is proposing a paid option to opt-out of advertising on Instagram and Facebook. It's basically extortion to have your right to protected.

Ads can and should be delivered without resorting to illegal that violates users' rights and exposes them to predatory or discriminatory advertising.

If can't conduct their business legally, that should be their problem to solve not ours.

ORG's @marianods responds.

Interesting! If they are offering a paid version to opt out of AI scaping and data sharing, I'd love that. If it's only to opt out of seeing ads, that is far less helpful. Especially if one is paying and still having their data scraped.
I agree though that the current practice of selling data (not just to advertisers, BTW) without significant restrictions is a problem.

@openrightsgroup @marianods @lisamelton Why would anyone assume they would protect privacy just cos they’re charging?

@openrightsgroup @marianods Facebook and Meta violate basic human rights.

Starting using the Permission Slip app (by Consumer Reports) to opt out of apps/services. When it came to Facebook, the process hit a snag. You're presented with pages long instruction on how to delete your acct, if you really really want to.
The other sites/apps have been fairly seamless. At most sending you an email to confirm your decision to delete your acct.

I hate facebook so much that I would not pay one penny to stay there. Sadly, I run local groups there and also have friends and family with whom I have no other contact, so I have to visit it sometimes... but paying??? No way.

SallyStrange,

@openrightsgroup @marianods anyone have a non-paywalled link?

they are running a protection racket now.

SofaKingHigh,

@openrightsgroup @marianods fun little trick, if you stop using fb and insta you stop seeing 100% of ads on them

2ndNatureDev,

@openrightsgroup @marianods @Lojie It’s an app/website. A club of people who wants to enter and have drinks for free. All they have to do is sell their privacy. Now you have choice: pay for entrance and drinks and the owner will pinky-swear not to invade your privacy (because as a company high on spying they’d totally be able to stop doing that).
Ooor, you could choose to just not go to that club. 🤔

All this is very interesting, because I'm not sure if it happened in other regions, but I remember a constant viral fake warning that made the rounds from time to time in Facebook in the early years; that it would soon be a paid service. And I remember it was such a dumb take, but finally it will become true.

cheekydevil,

@openrightsgroup @marianods Facebook is the single largest erosion point of democracy in human history. Full stop. Fact.

How ironic: It's behind a PAYWALL! @marianods

AllyD,

@openrightsgroup @marianods Is ORG's response also going to be made available outside a subscription wall?

A 20 billion Euro fine would be starters.

But then, why be in Meta silos anyway?

Calling it 'extortion' to offer an ad-free paid tier seems a bit of an overreaction, tbh.

But I wouldn't put it past these companies to double-dip and keep secretly selling data from paying customers, and that's not okay.
And it's a bit different if you somehow need Facebook to make a living, or if LinkedIn were to make their free version almost unusable.

Presumably 'opt out of ads' means you won't SEE ads but Meta will still track your behaviour so not much of a gain in terms of privacy.

It's a protection racket. I've been wondering how long it would take for this sort of extortion to begin happening on a large scale.
