Does #Microsoft#Word no longer allows people to open .ODT files? Have, a few times, had to safe .ODT files as .DOCX via LibreOffice so that Word users could open it.
.ODT is an open source file format, so its a deliberate choice for Word to not be compatible.
Why do people pay for a shitty product that lacks such basic functionality?
@jkn not me, two people I tried to send .ODT files too. I was wondering if it might be because they're using a MacOS Word, or perhaps a corporate version of Office360 with file restrictions?
@jkn@helma@fmy They definitely could be! Not really in a position to ask for this client, but I'll try to in the future. Even if its just that, its frustrating and a bit unethical.
@ncoca I recently had to re-render 8 hours of video production because the client couldn't open the files in Windows Media Player; the only media player in the world that couldn't open the files without paying for a subscription.
@ncoca@jkn@helma@fmy Microsoft Word 2019 is definitely capable of opening ODT files. I edited my invoices (which is in ODT format) some months ago with it.
I don't know about Office 365 or Office 2021 though.
@gombang@jkn@fmy@ncoca "Was", yes. "Is", not so sure. I'll check today what happens and come back to you. I had the same problem opening an ODT recently. Maybe new sertings required ir something stupid.
@gombang@jkn@fmy@ncoca Strange stuff. Rightclicking + open: opens it in LibreOffice after a warning to check if the document is from a reliable source plus the notification that the administrator does not allow this action (although we could even choose a Linux laptop where I work).
Just clicking it triggers the same warning, but is won't open.
After that it simply does not open anymore. I can however save docx in odt. 🤔

@jkn@helma@gombang@fmy me neither! I'll consider it, I feel like Microsoft, for some reason, escapes a lot of scrutiny compared to the other tech giants.
