Jupyter

Dear #lazyweb, is there any good guide to configuring #Jupyter to have multiple kernels associated with distinct #Python virtual environments?

I know that this is a thing that can be done and I have done it, but only by cobbling together the information from docs and partially-useful posts on forums/etc.

I have never encountered a good write-up of it that is beginner-friendly.

(I know that you can install Jupyter into each venv and switch servers, but this is NOT what I am asking about)

I love how @Bellingcat uses #Jupyter notebooks to help their non-tech-savvy researchers in using command-line tools. I guess we could do similar things with #digipres tools...

ProjectJupyter,

#JupyterLab has a new end of maintenance schedule. JupyterLab 3 now reaches its end of maintenance on May 15, 2024. Patch releases for critical issues may be released through the end of the year. Please upgrade to JupyterLab 4 as soon as possible. You can find more info about version lifecycles in JupyterLab’s docs: https://jupyterlab.readthedocs.io/en/latest/getting_started/lifecycle.html #Jupyter #OpenSource

the new summer term starts with a set of revised tutorials:

☀️ https://infovis.fh-potsdam.de/tutorials/

they are hosted on and can be run anywhere where notebooks are supported.

Think Python, 3rd edition

The book is now entirely in #Jupyter notebooks, so you can read the text, run the code, and work on the exercises, all in one place.

Starting in February 2024, @allendowney plans to release new chapters, about one per week.

ericjmorey,

@allendowney

This may have been reported already but all of the Colab links after chapter 5 say "Click here to run Chapter 5 on Colab", though the url linked to appear to be correct and not to chapter 5.

@ericjmorey @WetHat That should be fixed now. Thanks for letting me know!

A few weeks ago I asked about fixing a #Jupyter notebook. It's fixed now, and also nicer code. Run financial simulations with sliders for variables: https://nedbatchelder.com/blog/202402/updated_multiparameter_interactive_jupyter_notebook.html

OK, it's out, you can now profile @numba code in #jupyter with Profila v0.2:

I have a notebook with interactive widgets that worked a few years ago, and now complains "No artists with labels found to put in legend." I am a newb and don't know what I'm doing wrong. The last cell has the error: https://github.com/nedbat/broken-notebook/blob/main/Simplifed_Retirement.ipynb

nedbat,

@metasomite Hmm, thanks, that makes the error go away, but now the last cell draws nothing. I guess it's closer....

ehmatthes,
@ehmatthes@fosstodon.org avatar

@nedbat I think the call to plt.legend() is fine. Your widgets have values, and those values should be passed to the plotting code, so I think the "No artists..." message is a red herring.

I think the issue is that the data is not being re-calculated based on the widget values.

#QuartoPub 1.4 is out!

romainfrancois,

🥏 here comes Xeus-R, a future proof #jupyter kernel for #rstats based on the foundations of #Xeus.

📚 read more about it in our article on @ProjectJupyter blog https://blog.jupyter.org/meet-xeus-r-a-future-proof-jupyter-kernel-for-r-1adc5fdd09ab

☄️ I’ve had the privilege to work on it and benefit from the extensive #jupyter experience from the #quantstack team 👏🏾

🐣 Xeus-R is in its early days, and with the rise of #jupyterlite, it has in-browser #rstars experience in its horizon 🌄
