In our latest, Bellingcat’s Michael Sheldon and Aiganysh Aidarbekova show the extent of Russia’s worst flooding in decades by analysing satellite imagery

Floodwaters continue to rise in Russia’s Orenburg Region after dams burst along the River Ural earlier this week. According to the region’s governor, the water levels in its capital city Orenburg have risen to more than ten metres. https://apnews.com/article/russia-ural-mountains-floods-orsk-dam-break-9f14551354c528c7dfcf4cd764b8738a

Authorities in Russia and those of neighbouring Kazakhstan have declared states of emergency and evacuated 120,000 people from their homes on both sides of the border. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/water-levels-rise-russian-rivers-flooding-zone-2024-04-11/

The Bellingcat team used Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery, overlaid with Open Street Map data to showcase the extent of the flooding. For example, captures from April 9 show some riverside communities completely submerged in water.

Bellingcat,
@Bellingcat@mstdn.social avatar

Using satellite images and social media posts we found that embankments designed to hold back floodwaters broke in at least six points.

NEW: Bellingcat’s Eman El-Sherbiny geolocates strikes carried out in Rafah after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2024/04/10/in-rafah-israel-continues-to-strike-despite-un-ceasefire-resolution/?utm_source=mastodon

On Monday, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a date had been set for a large-scale Israeli military offensive in Rafah, despite there being approximately 1.5 million people taking refuge in Rafah, following previous orders to evacuate the North of Gaza.

Israel’s top military spokesman Daniel Hagari has said Israel has plans to evacuate Rafah, but US officials have said they are sceptical about such plans and US President Joe Biden has urged against the offensive. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/01/politics/us-israel-rafah-virtual-meeting/index.html

Two days after the ceasefire resolution was passed by the UN Security Council, a strike hit a house located just over two kilometres from Al Shaboura Camp, a designated 'safe area'. The severely damaged building is shown in footage filmed by Al Kofiya TV. https://alkofiya.tv/post/213961

We matched the facade of the damaged building and the apartment located across the street from Al Kofiya’s footage with satellite imagery and located the building here: 31.284967, 34.271340.

We also geolocated airstrikes along the Egyptian border. The aftermath of an airstrike in the west of Rafah is shown on this video published by Reuters. This strike also occurred on March 27th. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-strikes-rafah-raise-fear-assault-could-begin-2024-03-27/

Bellingcat geolocated the footage and identified the targeted building here, not far from the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip. 31.285613, 34.249152. https://www.google.com/maps/search/31.285613,+34.249152?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111

Despite announcing a date had been set for a large-scale Israeli military offensive in Rafah, Israel is yet to share clear plans about how the population will be protected.

In a previous investigation we looked at satellite imagery that indicated that there had been a large decrease in vegetation and land in Rafah due to an influx of people taking shelter. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2024/03/15/gazas-trees-disappear-showing-a-humanitarian-crisis/
