Found a nice article on the origins of the normal distribution.

Not the importance of 'top down' idealizations in Gauss's proof — these are essential even for the most empirical and 'bottom-up' of concerns: error in data collection.

Particularly interesting is how this story overlaps with the surprisingly slow process by which the mean was adopted as the main measure of central tendency.

And this shows the power of interdisciplinary interaction!

The normal distribution made the jump from astronomy to the social sciences thanks to a researcher that made the same jump. :)

And why is it called the "normal" distribution anyhow?

"It is quite appropriate that the name of the error curve should be based on a misconception."

(Excerpt also features a CS Peirce cameo!)
