This short (4'30'') poetic performance by Indian actress and activist Kalki Koechlin is breathtaking.

It's called "Dear Men"

When I found the performance's ⬆️ video, I already knew Ms. Koechlin, as some time before I had stumbled upon

"Rape - It's your fault".

It's tough stuff. Only watch (3'35'') if you're able to stand hefty sarcasm.

@mina
In contrast 2 her other 2 very impressive videos, this satirical clip of #KalkiKoechlin's did not convince me.

I'm a true fan of the works of @thejuicemedia, who, arguably, are currently the benchmark for political and social satire in a video clip format around here.

#Koechlin's clip is produced in that style +I can't even say that she did a poor job at mimicking it.

I couldn't shake off the dissonance I felt b/w the subject and the style.

@HistoPol

Kalki's video is more than 10 years old.

A bit unfair, to compare it to the more modern productions by
@thejuicemedia

Also, you can hardly compare the cultural context of a society, where even talking about consensual sex is a strong taboo, where (now rarely) widows are still burned, and female fetuses aborted (rather common), with one of the most progressive ones on the planet.

3/3

Let's finalise this thread by perhaps one of the most impressive poetry performances I have ever seen.

"The Printing Machine" deals with a variety of topics, but predominantly with the commodification of sexual violence by a ruthless media industry feeding the public's morbid fascination with this topic.

Written and performed by Kalki Koechlin

Even if it weren't for the message, her voice alone is enough reason to watch it.

edit:added CW

@mina

I think it's perfect
Thank you, Mina

I'm just trying to find the text...
I don't understand everything...you know my English...I'm already struggling to read english...

In any case, really impressive
Everything the video, the text, Kary is impressive just stunning

You somehow show me which project I should tackle next...
Thanks to @HistoPol
I had already started something...
Heading..."The Indictment paper" because it's so huge so far
Somehow my things are getting longer and longer

@mina@berlin.social avatar

@si_irini

I have now a subtitled version online.

However: There are some references to Indian news and culture, we might not entirely understand.

I don't think, it takes anything of the message away.

On the contrary: It shows, how universal the vicious news cycle, we are all part of, really is.

@si_irini

Sometimes, I miss the voices from India, Vietnam, Nigeria and other places, I used to have regularly in my Twitter bubble.

The Fediverse is still ethnically and socially a not very diverse place.

@HistoPol

si_irini,
@si_irini@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

Yes, that could be the case
You certainly know that better than I do, I've been on social media for far too short a time.

@HistoPol

@si_irini

It might have been a short time, but your contribution is wonderful.

@HistoPol

jabgoe2089,

@Mina well then tell your twitter bubblers to come to a better place ...

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@jabgoe2089

I did! Repeatedly.

But unfortunately, It didn't really work, except for the Germans and the Swiss (and there also only partly).

Don't get me wrong: I love it here, but I wish, the Fediverse idea spread a bit more.

jabgoe2089,

@Mina it doesn't spread itsself. the media hate the fediverse (choice is too complicated even for tech journalists). so you have to spread the idea ... :-)

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@jabgoe2089

I totally agree, and I do. On other platforms (not Twitter anymore) and by direct contact.

18+ HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

I can agree with your summary, Mina.
@mina.

The #Dadaistic performance of #KalkiKoechlin, "The Printing Machine - Unblushed" is very impressive, artistic, and also disturbing...which is why I've added a #CW, as it might trigger a lot of people, some of whom are my followers.

Any other adult should watch it.

Further warning: near-native level of #English is required.
As you've been so kind as 2 provide a subtitled version, that's easier😀

@HistoPol

Glad, you liked it.

However: This is by no means dadaistic.

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

Thanks a lot for sharing, @mina

I think every teenager and adult should listen to this impassionate speech by an actress on what it means to be a woman.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@HistoPol

Did you watch the other two? By the same actress/activist.

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

I now have, and I've also commented on all 3 of them now.

Due to several followers who are survivors of sexual violence, I had to remove my boosts of the last 2 about #Rape, as there is no content warning, and it would surely trigger them.

Thank you for putting in the work!

It is important.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@HistoPol

Stimmt.

@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

Richtig.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@HistoPol

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

Geboostet.
Hoffentlich sehen es sich viele an!

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@HistoPol

Das Filtern ist ein Argument.

HistoPol,
@HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

@mina

Yep.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@HistoPol
