orowith2os,

Calling the wider #Fediverse !

I'd like all of your thoughts regarding companies such as #Meta attempting to join Fedi. Anything and everything is good.

What about #decentralization and the future of the web? User #freedom ? #FOSS ? Open standards?

Can we maintain a web where everybody has their own instances of social media, tailored to their own specific use cases?

How about the user experience? Privacy? Can we manage user-respecting #telemetry with the fediverse and put it to use?

To sum it up: give me all of your thoughts on a #corporate web. Don't hold back, everything I listed here are just guidelines for what to respond with ;)

Spread this far and wide! I'm composing everything into one document (article), and will give proper attribution to everyone who's information I use.

Mark your replies as "mentioned people only" if you'd like to keep yourself anonymous, and I'll just use the information you gave me.

@orowith2os problems: 1, if p92/barcelona/threads suddenly federated, 1.2b users would flood the fedisphere; 2, interoperable post data means everything pouring into a corp owned instance; 3, haters and moderation, at both ends of corp fed instance (i/o) ; 4, shit posting and P92 promoted post behaviours, forcing everyone else to consume gsrbage; 5, adequate leverage of the existing Fediverse to manage the big corp content firehose domination....

tchambers,

@DrPen @orowith2os

Actually those users would all live on the P92 server or servers. So most of that wouldn't "flood" the Fediverse servers in terms of new accounts.

If they do standard ActivityPub, (yes an open question but is as reported) point 2 should not be an issue.

For points 3 and 4 and 5: We have the admin tools now to deal with bad actors as server admins, and users have the similar tools on top of it.

This is no different than managing any big new fedi server.

@tchambers @orowith2os yes I know they'd be hosted on the P92 server, like any other instance, but that's a huge influx of users, that's my point. Total domination overnight.

tchambers,

@DrPen @orowith2os

My point being the new user load wouldn't hurt the Fediverse servers as they are hosted on P92 servers.

If you mean "dominate" in that they have more market share than rest of Fedi - not sure what that dominance gives them. Not much in my view.

We just keep developing to standards and pull over users from their aside as we go.

@tchambers @orowith2os I mean, all other poss problems I suggested, as well as others Im sure, emanate from the sheer power that 1.2b users brings. The balance of power is completely destroyed. 10m/1.2b = game over. Also, there aren't adequate mod tools (yet) to deal with haters/content domination/user blocking. Ask Ralf formerly home.social. 40k users have to migrate due to lack of moderation tools.

tchambers,

@DrPen @orowith2os

I think you'd need to explain why having more market share of ActivtyPub users gives them any power over the open Fediverse. I don't see it.

We keep doing what we are doing and treat it just like any other big activity pub server.

Our admin tools work just fine for problem accounts, and they get no power "over" the spec unless we cede it. And since the Fedi is non-commercial at its core, no financial reason to do so.

@tchambers @orowith2os OK. So 1st, its not down to me as one person to 'explain' why 1.2b users from a single (megacorp) provider might be a problem, its for all of us to think about possible problems entailed in anything like that - see also Bluesky/others (eg Reddit?). They wont all use ActivityPub either, they will use their own interoperable federated protocols (eg BSky). 1/

orowith2os,

@tchambers @DrPen also keep in mind that you're not limited to what I asked for on the OG post!

If you've got anything to say related to the web, anything at all, I'd love to hear it. No need to restrict yourself to what I've asked for.
