What are the most pressing problems in the #fediverse today for where you stand?

@fediforum One particular one I've been looking into is the polarization of moderation policies.

For instance, someone might want an instance with free expression (particularly sexual expression), but without people being mean to one another

Another problem is the overuse of instance blocking (rather than simply as a response to extreme circumstances). It is very confusing for users from a usability standpoint, and it's a very blunt instrument.

This seems to stem a lot from the "my house my rules" type culture which permeates the fediverse.

    @doug What moderation tools do you think are needed that don't exist today?

    @doug Ah, a federated moderation network! That'd be indeed cool and useful and I believe @iftas is working on that, right?

    @fediforum I am looking for an instance that I could recommend to teenagers to avoid them signing up to ad based social media.

    @fediforum participant #agency.

    @mro Can you expand on this a little? Which participants don't have enough agency of what kind in your view?

    mro,
    @mro@digitalcourage.social avatar

    @fediforum virtually all have very limited agency in terms of look and features and are subject to moderation. E.g. they can't theme their blogs like myspace etc. And are usually sub-tenants, not house owners.

    @fediforum Monocultures and too little focus on plurality among implementations and too little focus on self-hosting / indie-sites

    @voxpelli Why do you think that is? How can it be addressed/alleviated, and who needs to do the addressing/alleviating?

    @fediforum I think ActivityPub when it’s promoted as the one tech to solve all things Fediverse then also promotes such monoculture and dodges complex questions of interoperability and plurality
