I was going to do a door like the original but I didn't really come up with a plan for that which worked without either more velcro than I wanted to screw around with or sleeving it onto the metal tubing and that's even worse, I just want something I can strap onto the frame without too much fuss if it might rain.
Here it is with the cover off - this is also post-cleanup and de-rusting which I don't think I've shown yet? I put it back together yesterday.
these are the only usable parts from the original cover and I’m going to reuse them as tiedowns. then i’ll add a skirt to go over them and also over the edges of the trailer.
@moira are you following a pattern or just fitting to the cage? Re door, it seems like you may want to get under it without exposing too much to rain. If that's not easy enough as is, maybe a front flap with some overlapping around the sides, where the front corners of the sides stay attached and the door's side flaps wrap over them, tying 1/3rd of the way back.
@moira This is lovely... Are you hand sewing? Something I should have known, is that good quality needles make a huge difference (same with machine sewing actually). Got "fancy" needles from Fabricland, then the local fibreart's shop (sadly now closed) was closing out, and I grabbed some needles, and it was... "Oh, now that's different..." So, maybe consider changing your needle (I'll probably need to be reminded myself).
I can do very reasonable hand sewing but this is not the time for that.
eta: it's a pain in the arse because 1) it's thick 2) it's slippery on one side which means 3) it ABSOLUTELY does not want to feed properly and 4) desperately wants to foul your thread and also 5) unpleasant curves and angles with very unforgiving fabric
a lot of this would be less bad if hand sewing but it would add hours and hours of unpleasant tedium to the project
