If you bought a that has an issue when the vendor is not available, YOU did the mistake with your choice for this product.

If you bought a lawnmower robot that doesn't work when its vendor is out of business, you did the mistake.

If you bought a computer whose vendor collects your data in his cloud ➡️ your mistake.

I can go on like that forever.

YOU need to accept the obvious downsides when you once took the very clear risk.

@publicvoit Ah, but what when the law makers legislate certain bad and stupid properties.

E.g. cars that must be online capable. Usage data that must be collected. DRM that cannot be removed without a trip to prison, and thus can be used by companies to basically legislate private business models?

Addendum: if you made your product choice without thinking about potential risks, YOU do have a problem anyway.

In that case, you really should think of asking independent experts before buying very complex products that may cause you issues in the long run.

Btw, experts are constantly warning of services that are harming your (in a very subtle form!) including cloud-based managers, , , , , ...

It's YOUR data and YOUR future. 😉

@publicvoit This VanMoof debacle has definitely made me more aware of buying products that rely on a company’s servers to work instead of it being offline. I buy HomeKit stuff and it feels about 90% right to rely on that, and not on other smaller company’s servers.

@tomk @publicvoit I buy homekit stuff also but I use home assistant as my point of truth so I can back everything up and then expose what I want to homekit. I feel less vulnerable that way.

@publicvoit You did the mistake ... But how - without becoming an expert - an average consumer can oversee that. I checked I can operate the bike without the app. I set it to shift the gears with the buttons. I was slightly worried about how long updates were supported, when it was replaced by a new model. I was not given a hint, it could get completely useless. I think on a certain level, laws have to be set,

@Bugspriet Any consumer doesn't need to be an expert herself. However, consumers need to learn to ask an independent expert if a certain complexity is involved.

You don't operate a car without a license and the same way, tool choices of high-tech tools aren't for people who only believe the salesperson who makes the money.

I blame 50% the school education and 50% the people who don't think twice when sacrificing their freedom, privacy, security, money, ...

Another example: phishing attacks.

@publicvoit That is true. When I bought this item i at least asked things pointing in the right direction, but never digged deep enough to be on the secure side.

@Bugspriet My personal choice for products like lawnmower robot, photovoltaic, ... was: I don't have Internet. What impact does this have? Does it stop working? How about updates? ...

(btw, SW updates are good but the basic functionality should not depend on network access)

There are simple + more difficult choices, even for a tech-savvy person. For example, it's almost impossible to buy an electric car without buying massive surveillance. And its hard to reduce surveillance on mobile phones.
