I don't know if it's due to over-exposure to programming memes but I certainly believed that no one was starting new PHP projects in 2023 (or 2020, or 2018, or 2012...). I was under the impression we only still discussed it at all because WordPress is still around....
Funny that a lot of people responded by bashing on PHP, but I saw very little real arguments why PHP is so awful. What makes PHP that bad besides being the target of memes?
I mean "lame", "old" or "dead" aren't particularly convincing arguments.
What are those warts? I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just not educated enough on this subject. Is it more the ease of use (needing much more lines of code to do something or you need to build things yourself since there isn't a function for it) or more the way the language is build (multiple functions doing the same thing or misorder of arguments)? Or is it just the performance?
I started with PHP years back, shifted to Android/Java and then to C# (Xamarin) to Javascript (node.js/React(Native)). All in a hobby/personal project form, so I didn't bump into problems with PHP most peofessionals seem to have and I still use it for API's sometimes.
I just wanted to share that when you have an Android device, you can easily get into US mode with a VPN. Connect your VPN to a US server and create a VanMoof account and connect the bike. You only need to do it once. All updates can be done without it. For iOS you can follow the vanmoofer instructions which require a couple more...
I tried to update via the app and the bike needs to be unlocked for that. But lazy as I am I didn't want to walk to the bike to unlock. So I did it via the app. It unlocks and then you can update the bike. But since the phone is too far away and the bike is never moved, the kicklock doesn't disengage. So I have the feeling the...
This, not everything is there yet and things are not ironed out and honed in to keep you addicted. The "thrill" of using something new with it's fault is addicting enough.
Funny, I always pictured the brain a bit bigger. Maybe due to TV series and such and because I couldn't really judge what the size would be based on the head.
It sparked a controversial question in my mind, does a bigger brain make you smarter (so big headed people could be smarter). One page I came across (which looked at least a little legit) was this: Stanford Ask a neuroscientist
I've been seeing a lot of pro-reddit, anti-mod comments, despite tens of thousands of up votes on Reddit blackout posts. Pro-reddit comments also have a ton of gold for some reason....
What are some good pixelfed accounts I can follow. I have a few but not as good as some instagram people I follow. I liked Peter McKinnon or Jordi Koalitic. Are there pixelfed alternatives? They don't have to be professional photographers, but some good original content is appreciated.
It’s disappointing to see some of the larger subreddits going public with a ‘what’s the point?’ tone. Most are staying private, but some aren’t. As if Reddit doesn’t exist solely because of its user generated content. If enough subs permanently shut down, they’ll be forced to reconsider their API position. Social...
I think one of the big problems is that the mods are just as 'addicted' to reddit as the users are. The mods don't want to lose their community. If it's not for all the work that went into it and the joy they get out of it or for providing a community for a niche group, it's for the 'powertrip' of being a mod.
So it's also a case of selfdiscipline. Are they able to restrict themselves.
VanMoof (bicycle company): Premium price, service not included.
Volkswagen: We are proud of our past, in celebration every car expells toxins for you to breath.
Dell: Because you feel like you should pay for "quality"
Like for example, how someone thinks because you work in IT you can fix their TV, or how if you're into music you must be able to play any random instrument....
I'm an Air Traffic Controller and people always 'joke' (or really don't know) I wave the batons at planes to get them to the gate. No I don't and I'm not in the tower either (while that is a good guess).
People saying it must be so stressful. Well yes, it sometimes is. But so is every job. And we're trained to handle it.
People blaming us for not keeping an eye on cities or nature while controlling planes. We have procedures which take that into account and we are hired to be as efficient as possible. If the rules allowed it, we're doing it.
People saying pilots fly the plane and we do nothing. Yeah pilots fly the plane, but look at all the dumb idiots on the road when giving way or getting in one lane/queue. You really think the sky would go any better when they can't even see eachother?
I have a VanMoof S5. I wanted an ebike to do some riding around town to avoid taking the car everywhere. And it succeeded. I take my bike for all rides that can be done in 40 minutes or less (one way). So that shaves quite a bit off my car usage.
Would I buy it again? If Veloretti didn't bring out their ace two, I would've said 'yes'. Now, I would at least test ride the Veloretti. The customer service of VanMoof is shit. I've send them two messages about different subjects. The oldest one is 1,5 month old and they never replied (outside their automatic replies). They said they would reply within 5 business days, and they can even make money if they reply. I knew this upfront, so it was a calculated 'risk'.
Funny they are selling it as 'targetting' since most of the ads I see on reddit are scam sites using vague titles below a celebrity who sure didn't approve being used by the ad. If that's the way they want to go, fine. But then it's not for me.
Yes, Kbin/lemmy needs enough good and original content to flourish. What I currently miss is the niche subreddits on lemmy. For specific brands or particular products or hobbies it's easy to find a community on reddit, but there are only a few already available on lemmy.
Right now, I’m playing the early access version of Baldurs Gate 3. I’m getting ready to put it down (frustrated: BG3 has the potential to be good, but without controller support, I’m getting really frustrated with the UI. ) and switch to Yakuza Like a Dragon. What are you playing now and what are you looking forward to...
Lately I've been playing Farthest Frontier and NIMBY. Before that it was Crusader Kings III and FIFA '23. The latter mostly for some quick dumb downtime. But I'm a bit uncertain with what game I should play and what I'm enjoying.
Haha, NIMBY rails is a game where you design a railway network on a real life map. So you can start in your home town and build from there.
I think it's quite detailed with all the timetable settings and ways to route traffic. But you must be into these kind of games, otherwise it's redious and boring.
I hope you're right but I think most people will go on and use it. If they quit for the next couple of days, they will go back after a while.
Does anybody have the numbers for twitter? How many people stayed away?
Basically title. Me personally a friend had one and I figured it'd be fun. I got a £4 black forest (or something) from AliExpress and it's been utterly fantastic.
I enjoy nice and quality stuff. After deciding I wanted to keep a journal to keep track of some personal growth (or shrinkage), I wanted to buy a nice pen and some inkt. I like the way a fountain pen writes and it gives an additional moment of peace when I take the cap of the pen and open the journal. That's when I get in 'reflection-mode'.
Where do people go who are adventurous?
What vacation holiday do they have?
Was anyone else surprised to see Kbin being written in PHP?

I think we should (politely) message major hobby subreddits that went public to go private again. It's important to continue the protest.

Will Reddit ever cave in?
Exactly as the title says, do you guys think Reddit will buckle and at least be more reasonable or maybe even reverse their current decisions?...
how did you get into fountain pens?
