It's very subjective when a #visualnovel suddenly starts getting interesting and gripping. To me, it only happened in chapter 6 in #SteinsGate. Chapter 5 was OK, but before, it was a real slog. I've been playing the game for months on-an-off like a boring relationship you can't end. It's nice that the story finally picked up for me, but why only after 10 hours? I recommend the game, but damn, it took me a minute. #videogames

I already laughed, cried, everything. The game reminds me of "Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis that I've finished recently. These #timetravel stories, when well written, can be unpredictable and full of meaningful human connections. And there's way too much that can go wrong 😅

rakuno,

@helligbird Yeah, I never expected that when I started to play Stein's Gate too but they really managed to do it well.

I was even more surprised that a lot of it was based on real world time travel theory.

@rakuno Yes, and many concepts of quantum physics are explained there, too. I find the whole thing fascinating. It think it was what kept me going in the first hours. But I still don't get the structure of the game. Those sms from the first chapters clearly influenced what I'm playing now, but I don't know to what extent. After my first playthrough, I'll check a guide.

rakuno,

@helligbird The sms are my only nitpick about the game. To me they just sounded like gibberish but they influence the game's story some how.

The only way I was able to get through the game was playing it with a guide otherwise I would have abandoned it midway.

aceattveg,

@rakuno @helligbird Steins Gate and SG0 are so emotionally devastating and also joyous at times. But yeah like most Visual Novels, in order to see all the content, a guide is usually required. SG is especially tough becuase instead of dialogue options you have the sms replies which can change the route as well as get you little optional things.

@aceattveg @rakuno @helligbird I think I pretty much just went through all iterations until I hit the intended ending. 😬
If I remember correctly, you can speed through large parts of the story, once you've read them, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. 😅

rakuno,

@mforester @aceattveg @helligbird Yeah. Thank the gods for the skip option to be a normal (and expected!) feature of Visual Novels.

Still going through iterations blind would have driven me crazy.

@rakuno @aceattveg @helligbird well, if you end up somewhere you've been before you can just skip through or abort and reload. I don't think there are that many choices. I remember them more like dedicated branches, where you get to learn about a specific character in depth and all of them were well written and worthwhile.
