i tooted out yesterday an off-hand comment about how i was enjoying #TheExpanse because they actually have to deal with things like g-forces (quite realistic compared to my usual #StarWars-style #SciFi), and it spawned a two-day long multi-branch conversation between at least a dozen people including (but not limited to) Bussard ramjets, fusion reactors, socio-economic analyses of science fiction politics, the list goes on.
@mishamouse the only thing not great about the fediverse is that I somehow missed that thread despite doing everything I can to catch every scrap on #TheExpanse content on here! :)
@seachanger@mishamouse He’s the worst part of the show. In the books he is less so but also still too much of a straightforward ‘I will save the world’ kind of guy. The other characters are so much more fun

He plays it pretty true to the character from the books. His story arc is really about a fairly traditional "everyman" joining a more diverse world and finding a community that he loves. Good or bad, it's a pretty standard storytelling trope. If anything, the show pulls back from him and the Roci crew a bit to make room for other characters that weren't as developed in the books.
I will say there is one moment (maybe season 4?) where Naomi wakes Holden out of a dead sleep to tell him something and his semi-panicked "I'm awake" is one of the most comically genuine little touches I've ever seen on screen.
All that said, I would watch the hell out of a Camina
Drummer series. Cara Gee is so fucking good in that role.
@seachanger@skinnylatte@mishamouse part way through the books right now, I think one of the major themes is that Holden is a white dude from earth with a savior complex and complete lack of awareness of the interplay of race, politics, etc. I thought they did a pretty decent job of getting those flaws on screen.
