@og Signal does no longer support sending SMS.

But if you are looking for a non-Google alternative, have a look at QKSMS:

Unfortunately you can't do that anymore (at least in the latest beta version)

@og No. They stopped SMS and MMS use a while ago (which i personally think was a mistake).

og,

@emsquared Are you on #Android ?

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@og yep

og,

@emsquared What’s a good alternative to #SignalApp

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@og Signal is a great app. They just phased out the SMS support (you can't encrypt sms). I kept Signal but just added another (in my case open source) app for the rare times I use sms.

og,

@emsquared Most of my family and friends are all on #iOS and that’s why I have an #iphone so I am switching to #Fairphone and am looking for a decent app for messaging #iPhones ???

@og ah i see. Obvs signal is cross platform but relies on your iPhone friends having it installed (they are more likely to have wire installed which is on android too). If you don't trust telegram or Whastapp for encrypted messages then you can facetime on android via a web browser (not ideal as your iphone facetime friend has to send you a link invite).

@emsquared @og The only reason I was using signal was the claim of encrypting SMS. Encrypting SMS may not be efficient but why is it impossible?

cherti,

@LovesTha @emsquared @og interestingly enough, since forever it was called Signal they never claimed to encrypt SMS (and didn't).
So apparently the part of their reasoning with regards to users assuming something that's not there does seem to hold water, making it a good choice they removed it.

@cherti @emsquared @og I know human memory is unreliable, but I remember having signal explained as sending encrypted data via sms once it has established encryption keys via data connection.

While SMS character limits would limit the quality of that encryption, I don't know of a reason that can't work.

cherti,

@LovesTha @emsquared @og it can, and Signal has done SMS-encryption when it was still called Textsecure, but that was always independent of data. AFAIK what you describe has never been and while it can work, the limits of SMS make the overhead difficult to manage.
Data has just completely replaced it and what you describe seems to have made it a good choice, otherwise people will assume encryption where there is not, which can be quite dangerous.

So good/necessary call on Signal's side I'd say.

Depends who do you want to reach. I've been super happy with #matrix for couple of years now. Like slack or discord, but opensource and federated. And e2e encrypted. i use it for both private and work chats. https://matrix.org/
