@ernie @tedium By jealousy guarding their data they will also lose track of it altogether. Or, not lose track of it, but merely think it resides on an operable disk when it doesn't.

Unlike paper books or celluloid movies or vinyl records, digital data that just sits on a shelf—idle, not live—usually quickly dies.
