I've fallen into "No Man's Sky"! I made it to the space station, and have selected an avatar that truly resembles what I look like... on the inside.

I now have a glowing ball for a head, which seems to be held in place by rotating electromagnets. Magnificent!

#NMS was created for PC but the #VR adaption (which I'm playing) is not at all bad. It's really... quite... addictive. I played for 4 hours and I'm eying my battery and wondering if I could hop on for a few minutes... before... bed...

Coming in... upside down... because I'm a terrible flier and planets can appear above you in space.

@elizabethtasker i keep hearing really good things about NMS in VR.

@aetios the VR controls were added later, and there are a few glitches. But it’s clearly been thought about, with some nice touches, and the immersion is fantastic. You can also switch between PC and PCVR seamlessly on steam.

Visited the base of a friend in No Man's Sky #NMS in #VR who has been playing for a number of year years. The depth of the game is slightly overwhelming! This base has everything from greenhouses, generators and storage lockers, and piping to bring raw materials down from the mountainside. And a animated dance floor. And jellyfish bar staff. And he has a freighter full of ships.

Visiting friends in a space setting in this way does really remind me of the book, "Ready Player One"!

@elizabethtasker Is this working now? I’ve been wanting to play it and tried a few months ago (I have an Index) but it wouldn’t start a game so I returned it.

@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@holly it’s a little buggy, but I’ve not had any major issues. I’m on the Quest 3, but of course though steam to my PC.

We set off to find a new planet to build neighbouring bases in #NMS. No Man's Sky actually generates planets procedurally, giving a near limitless number of permutations. A large number were thus summarily dismissed due to not really feeling the grass colour...

As I'm a newbie with poor equipment and poorer shooting skills (I will note that's a bit of an issue in #VR), my more understandable vote was for a planet low in hazards such as radiation, storms and rampaging sentinels.

Maybe... here!

Planet at night where you can see the planet rings in the sky.

@elizabethtasker - I bought/played NMS when it first came out. Unfortunately I just fell out of playing the game. I’m not even sure what the goals of the game are in today’s version. Maybe time to revisit.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@ianbradbury A number of my friends said the same! It's a never ending game, so most people will drop out after a while! But then you have to catch up again if you come back in. One of my friends has just done this, and end up being chased by sentinels. So THEY remembered a long-ago grudge... 🤣

I'm still learning the ropes, but I think there are campaigns sometimes, where you effectively restart temporarily to complete these? One of those might be good window back in.

@elizabethtasker - I’ve just been looking for the disc. Hmmm. I think it might be in the loft. No doubt there will be a multi day download required to patch and get up to date. Now where was the ladder……

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@ianbradbury A disk?! You must have been one of the first players! It's 50% off on Steam at the moment if you can't find the disk (but the sale does end today).

I've built a new base... in a cave. Cool idea? Or terrible? I am slightly annoyed by the lack to flat surfaces to place things nicely. #NMS #VR

nichg,

@elizabethtasker Could you dig to the surface, snap some modular parts up there to establish a level, and extend your base down into the caverns via snapped pieces?

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@nichg I think if I just put the modular parts into the cave, then they’ll be embedded (rather than flattening the terrain). If I artificially flatten the terrain, it’ll regrow, so I’ll have to keep doing it! I did think I might be able to put a raised floor in part of it though…

PeterB,

@elizabethtasker existing caves can be a great place to build bases in, with the upside of avoiding heat, storms, cold, radiation, etc. Stuff that is built into caves, which a traveller created herself, or in Forrest’s with all trees harvested, will invariably be surrounded with the same material that was removed, after a reload (or after about 14 days). That is one of the reasons why many build high in the sky.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@PeterB ooh good tip. I’m in a natural cave, but I will avoid terrain manipulation to dodge being buried.

My No Man's Sky #NMS flying skills in #VR have lacked... something.... a lot.

But. This. Was one hell of a precise landing.
