Me: attempts to set up mini-G’s new #Nintendo#Switch and bung a dozen games on there.
Nintendo: allows me to buy six and then point-blank refuses to allow me to buy more, saying there are problems with two credit cards and a PayPal account.
Er. What? Is this normal? (The accounts are fine.)
@Retrosponge Well, that worked, so that’s something. Even though it weirdly took two attempts to add one of the vouchers. Good job I won’t have to add games often, because this is horrible compared to the App Store or Google Play.
@Retrosponge It’s all back in the box now, ready for the big day. But I’ll at some point try buying something else and give Nintendo a nudge if it doesn’t work. If this is a security thing, it’s absurd.
People with new consoles might… want to buy a bunch of new games?
There’s a massive sale on, which might make people… want to buy a bunch of new games?
@craiggrannell
It really is. I mean I can understand wanting to limit the damage if someone gets their account stolen, but sabotaging legitimate consumers to do so is boneheaded.
@Retrosponge Yep. And there are ways around this. 2FA, eg. This is the first Nintendo console I’ve bought since the DS. I was really quite excited about it. Now, I’m thinking I don’t want to buy another, if it’s going to be a massive pain in the arse to pay for games.
(Online, it also seems Nintendo’s response is to blame card providers. Which is quite something. One of the cards Nintendo said didn’t work was fine about a minute later on Amazon.)
@craiggrannell I'm not sure what's up with Nintendo's relationship with banks/credit card companies, but I've had my cards locked more than once simply trying to buy a game off the eShop. I exclusively use eShop cards now.
@88 Urgh. And the problem there is you end up with odds and ends sitting in the account. I’m used to eg App Store and Google Play, where the store owner takes the specific amount required.
@craiggrannell Yea I don’t understand why Nintendo can’t make it as seamless as the App/Play stores. My bank told me the reason is eShop purchases sometimes get flagged as “gaming” and categorized like online gambling. Can’t see why Nintendo wouldn’t have weight to resolve this, especially since it’s their bottom line and not only a user convenience thing.
@88 I find it odd that it allowed five or six purchases and then just stopped. OK, I thought, maybe my bank had blocked it. But then two credit cards and a PayPal account also didn’t work.
