whiteice,

One of my weird quirks is I can't listen to music in the background. It hugely distracts from what I'm doing and so becomes irritating.

I like music, but my world is free of it unless my main task is listening to music, or at movies, concerts, clubbing, etc.. I don't even listen to music in a car.

I get the same problem with television in the background, even if it's muted. Changing background visuals are as distracting as music.

@whiteice interesting. It actually really helps me to have loud music blaring in my face as I'm working. It's odd. But not for studying or trying to retain information. But for a good flow state? Yes. Helps if I know the music - if it's new, a little tougher because I'm more actively listening to it 🤣 Also interesting what the other person commenting here said, I'm a musician (I suppose) and I am pretty influenced by music, maybe overly so.

@whiteice Are you a musician? That is common among some musicians.

Not a musician of any type or skill level.

My quirk seems related to being bipolar - I have difficulty filtering / managing sensory input. I can't make background music background - it's always something my brain actively engages with.

I get distracted if people are talking in the background as well - I get pulled into the conversation (not socially useful).

This doesn't seem a purely bipolar symptom - people with ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders have similar issues.

@whiteice @franktaber ah wow yeah I've heard that.. My dad always used to say I'm "too affected by music" 🙄 I've never been diagnosed with anything other than depression. My wife was recently diagnosed ADHD. I doubt I am (and I was originally diagnosed bipolar many years ago but then recently had another professional tell me I'm not). Definitely depression though

"too affected by music" isn't a bad description of one of the hypomania symptoms. Just saying.

When I do listen to music, it's usually at full volume, so it becomes the world. Think being in a club dancing to trance music.

Sorry about the depression. Hope you have meds that help you control it.

I have this to an extent but its variable (I can listen to some music in the car but have to mute it at busy roundabouts / junctions for safety). I was a rave DJ and a sound engineer (and still do some work for the community radio station), so its also that I can concentrate on it too hard (I am sensitive to glitches and rough sound)

@vfrmedia @whiteice @franktaber ohh wow. Yeah, I noticed, when it's just me in the car, pretty loud. With wifey, low or not at all. She gets anxiety from it, I've noticed, and having it low is good to talk.. despite us liking a lot of similar music. Just best without. When it's me, like, eardrum blasting level 🤣

@whiteice @franktaber haha true. Different levels. I mean, it's been Springsteen all morning, now I need something faster. Yeah, I'm on hardcore stuff (Trintellix) I have to take at night because it messes me up to much during the day. Stuff for resistant depression as the other stuff has all stopped working, been on every kind. But yeah better lately. More good days than bad.
