There is a particular small bush in our back garden, next to the patio 🌳

If you stand beside it and look up at the gable peak of our house, there’s a star there ⭐️

Always.

All year round, day and night, whether you can see it or not 👀

It pleases me no end to know that 🙂🤷‍♂️

ely,

@markmccaughrean I recall an article about this project ( polaris, northern hemisphere)
But I do not recall where that was. Any hint?

@ely About what project? Planting bushes & trees at to stand next to such that Polaris will be lined up with the apex of nearby buildings? I mean, I proposed that in this thread, but otherwise … ?

Or something else linked with Polaris? We did an art-science project with Paul Quast in 2016, sending human messages towards it from our ESTRACK network: https://blogs.esa.int/rocketscience/2016/07/28/a-simple-response/

@markmccaughrean Grin… you are a bit of a romantic…

@Divorytaur You’ve sent me down the rabbit hole this morning: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism

To be honest, I’d probably consider myself more of rationalist, a product of the Enlightenment, but yes, there definitely is quite a bit of 19th century Romanticism in me too, especially when it comes to the connection with nature, as well as the music 🙂

Maybe I need to found a new movement combining these two apparently immiscible fluids 🤪

Love things like this.

@markmccaughrean I'll have to find where in my backyard I can see Polaris. Then, line up with a point on my rough and put a stake down. Later, plant something there.

@Ralph058 Sounds like a plan 🙂👍

@markmccaughrean I think ChromeOS' spell checker is drunk. I know I typed roof because I made a typo (double f) and corrected...yet, the published version had "rough"

@Ralph058 Ha – I just figured you were living on the unkempt edge of a golf course 🤪

Of course, Polaris is not exactly at the celestial North Pole & currently makes a daily circular motion of about 1.3° diameter around it, more than twice the width of the full Moon.

But the bush is big enough that I can always shuffle a bit & line Polaris up with the gable peak 🤷‍♂️

And yes, due to the precession of the equinoxes, Polaris will move away from the North Pole over the coming thousands of years.

But neither I nor the house will last that long 😬✌️

Actually, a cool community art & science endeavour would be to find prominent buildings with a clear north sky & paint a letter N near their peak.

Then plant a tree nearby, with a similar N sign attached to it.

Where, if you stand immediately in front of it, Polaris always lines up above the building’s peak.

Leave people to make the link between the two N’s and figure out the connection 🙂

Or just do it in your own garden, if you have one, as in my original picture.

The Polestar Project.

(Admittedly, this only works for people in the northern hemisphere, but then that is 90% of humankind 🙂)

@markmccaughrean whoa, I guess this is obvious looking at a map, but it never hit me just how lopsided that population distribution is

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@aburka There’s a significant asymmetry in the land distribution, albeit less skewed: 67% in the north, 33% in the south. But that’s only part of the story …
