If you want to see something like this in the US you can visit Claremont, CA and see a building using this technique called the Whole Earth Building. The NGO named Uncommon Good built it and I was a part of supervising the build when I was becoming an expert in simple survivable structures.
The building was built using earthbags or superadobe. On site earth and 15% portland cement was used for the building material.
It uses no A/C. It has an industrial fan that pulls air that is cooled by underground tubes. I have photos of it being built but I have to dig them out. If I remember to post them I will later but you can use a search engine and see it.
The walls where the vaults meet are about 44” thick. The Sun takes about an hour to penetrate an inch of the wall. The Sun basically attacks the structure all day and then the thermal battery properties of the earthen walls holds that heat through the night which is beneficial because desert temps drop 30 degrees at night and the slow release of heat can be helpful.
One downside is that if you do not have a viable cooling option the opposite will occur such as in the Bonita Domes Project in Joshua Tree. It took 7 years to build (mostly with volunteers) and that single family house is unlivable. But it’s up for sale for $2million because its unique 🤣. That house tried to use the wind catcher but it is not functional and the house gets super hot in the summer and feels like a cold cave in the winter.
It was so bad the building officials called it a mistake to the owner, I felt so bad. But damn, they’re the ones who let owner builder hippies to build experimental structures in their town 🤔
Anyway I designed some bunkers and emergency shelters from that experience and moved on to better experimental homes that use high tech and minimalist designs like the iT Homes. I recommend them more than the earth domes.
