It’s easy to feel powerless these days. It feels like so much is out of our hands: Conflicts and fascism on the rise, threatening of human rights, especially of LGBTQIA+ people, a lackluster pandemic response.

There’s not a lot we can change, but going to vote. Elect people that align with your values. Re-elect them if they prove to be trustworthy. Elections can feel like doing nothing, but they are your direct way to change politics.

Elections are a super power. Use it.

The very fact we have to say “vote against fascism” is a damning indictment of the failure of our democratic institutions and the rule of law. You shouldn’t be able to vote FOR fascism. Democracies that lack constitutional safeguards against fascism will, eventually, stop being democracies. When? At the last election. The one that elected the fascists. Democracy cannot tolerate fascism. Tolerance cannot tolerate intolerance. I’m afraid this is a lesson we will learn the hard way. Again.

@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@aral I agree. The hesitation from politics to ban clearly extremist parties pains me a lot. And we have been there in Germany. We have the safeguards, but they have to be implemented and used.

Just noticed that both WhatsApp and Signal signify who wrote a message just by aligning left for the other person and right for you, and different colours. In groups they also add names but not in 1:1s. Does everyone find that easy to understand?

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@joelanman I can’t speak for everyone, but I find it intuitive, especially seeing that my bubbles are near the send button and animate in when you press it. I usually also remember who said what in a conversation, so it’s pretty clear.

Sure, for someone who just sees it after the fact, it might take a second, but for a personal chat tool, I think it’s totally OK. I know what my name is and who I’m chatting with, no need for constant names.

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying out Plausible. No more feedback needed for now. Thanks!

I posted last year about getting off of Google Analytics for something simple, and not creepy. I got that but now I’m looking for another alternative again. $5/mo-ish. Let me know what you use.

@joesteel I can’t recommend @plausible highly enough. Privacy protecting, great service and very minimal.

People don’t tell you this writing trick, but the best way to catch grammatical errors and typos BEFORE you publish is AFTER you publish.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@joesteel If you fix errors before someone has the chance to really find them, did you really publish the errors?

also. Ah. Oh.

Anyone running the Kitsune Tails demo on a Steam Deck? Did you have to do anything special to get it to work? Someone asked me for help saying clicking the button on the store just turns it white and doesn't do anything and uhh, I don't actually have one myself cause I don't have that kinda spending money >_>

EDIT: it apparently worked after persistently trying repeatedly. Thanks everyone

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@eniko No problem at all installing. The UI of the Steamdeck is confusing. The button gets white, but then you should be able to select the SD card or internal storage and then the download begins. Nothing more to do. It’s then in the library.

FYI when I’m not interacting with you like normal, you might be at a conference. I don’t want to worry about you, so I might have muted you for the next few days. I do that for my own mental health.

Stay safe, keep others safe, mask up.

Another attempt to blog something thwarted by CMS/Server shenanigans. Frustrating. 😬

Usually @getkirby and @hallo are so reliable, but today it’s just all slow, including throwing error messages while typing.

Hope i get it fixed soon. 😢

Last week there was a conference in Berlin, and of course now people are joking about the colds they got there on LinkedIn.

Of course it’s a “cold”, because there is no virus currently in a pandemic state that uses the same ways to distribute itself.

Accessibility tests are much easier if you go by success criterion and write up failures of them instead of identifying possible issues and then assign SCs to it.

And it gives you a handy guide to keep track of what you already tested and what not. Try to flip your approach and see if you think it’s easier, too!

yatil, to random
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Am I alone in the view that’s people need to meet WCAG first before really looking into improving UX?

Sure, a lot of things can be improved alongside doing the minimum, but if you don’t meet WCAG, you leave people behind.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@DanielGoransson So which SC irrelevant for accessibility? And the “meets WCAG 100% but is completely impossible to use” UI I’d like to see. (Also, of course in that case oh would go beyond WCAG, too, in advice. But IMHO always also WCAG.)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@DanielGoransson Or “it’s so bad this UI can’t be made accessible without compromise”, but that has nothing to do with WCAG then.Thats fundamental design badness.

That you can do better than the minimum guidance of WCAG IS THE WHOLE POINT.

It’s not wiggle room that you can do better.

You can drive your tires to the absolute minimum of what is allowed, but you can also have more profile on them. It’s totally ok. That doesn’t mean there is wiggle room.
