I decided to challenge myself and only play my 3DS for 30 days.

So today I gave Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D a first and last try. While the game is decent fun, it's way too intense for me thanks to the time limits. Still, it's very impressive what they managed to cram in here, even if animations frames at 5 meters get super choppy so the framerate overall is able to keep up.

Won my second run yesterday in Slay the Spire. I really enjoy the game and I'm learning a lot about deckbuilders at the same time. It gives me plenty ideas for my own deckbuilding game.

@neatchee I know that one of the mods warned the person via pm. The same person told us publicly to calm down, which erks me, because I wasn't the one breaking any rules. I was already leaving when I just decided to block the person in question and stay away from the community a couple of days. I'll see how I feel about it by then and decide what to do then.

March is nearing its end, so it's time to look back at what I have done!

Let's start with gaming: I started and completed Stray this month and it was a fascinating little game that was short and very enjoyable. You play as a cat and that by itself is jusr wonderful.

I played a lot of Balatro and it gave me the idea for my own cardgame, which I am actively working on.

Civ 6 is another mainstay. I managed to beat a game with Elizabeth in my fourth attempt!

I am still playing Alan Wake and I'm about 5 hours in now. It is fun and atmospheric, however the writing is sometimes hilariously bad. The FBI agent calling Wake by various writers names is the dumbest stuff so far. How would he even have heard about Lovecraft?

Also gave Unicorn Overlord a go, but didn't get enough time with it yet. So far, it's fascinating and I know I am going to love it.

Got Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden last week and that game is kinda amazing for focusing on the Adventure part of Action-Adventure. Very overlooked game!

I'm considering doing a big, huge thread on here about the Nintendo Wii. Going through it's launch in Europe up until the Wii U hit the scene. I have huge nostalgia for the system and used to have around 200 games for it... might be fun?

Stray has a really interesting atmosphere. While it seems dark at first glance, it has this undercurrent of optimism and humor in it, that makes it special.

It helps that you are a cat, too.

As much as I enjoy the Steam Deck (and my friend's ROG Ally :akko_giggle:) I really do miss smaller handhelds. I could just throw my Vita/3DS in my bag. The Steam Deck... not so much

Thanks to gamepass I was finally able to check out what Bloodstained is like on a machine that can actually handle it.

Too bad I still don't like it. I do not enjoy the mood, story or even the gameplay. It all feels so very off.

I'm feeling alienated by the uproar over Bridgy. People are genuinely outraged that their public posts might be made available on Bluesky. I'm trying to process that.

Imagine putting up posters all over town and then yelling at tourists for reading them. Or using a platform that's designed for interoperability to scream that you didn't consent to it.

I don't believe people misunderstand Mastodon this deeply. What's public is public, everyone knows that. But right now it feels like a vocal group insists it should act like a walled garden, and it's (quite intentionally) the worst possible foundation for anything like that.

All of a sudden I lost interest in gaming again and I'm reading more again. I think it definitely has something to do with work related stress. The urge to read jus increases the more time I spend in front of bright screens (eReaders are fine)....

The end of the year is getting close. Maybe now is a good time to look back on the games I completed this year and what I thought of them

This will be a pretty long thread I guess and I'll add to it over the next couple of hours or even days. I don't do awards or "the best gaem of the year" because honestly I find that to be a silly idea and in retrosprect you might consider your favorite game of the year from 2007 to be an entirely different one than the one you picked while stuffing yourself with christmas cookies because time is a flat circle and your existence is more finite then you ever will realize.

Bleak.

The first game I finished this year was Mushihimesama. There was a time where I thought I was one of those people who are really into shmups. I am not. However, there are those days where I want to enjoy something in a quick burst and if there is a genre that fits that bill, it's shmups. I am not good at them, but blowing stuff up is fun and Cave really does know who to make things go boom while having some neat scoring system in the background. So this is a win for all of us.

The second game I finished this year was Atari 50th Anniversary collection.

I dislike Atari 2600/5200 games with passion. To me, they are too simple. However, I respect them and their importance for the medium, so this documentary of a game hit the spot perfectly. It got me some good insight into how gaming came to be and gave me the opportunity to try many, many games for a very, very short time.

I am an impatient man, raised on NES games.

The third game was Dead End Aegis.

I struggle to formulate anything cohesive about this game. I was impressed, disgusted, sad, happy, angry and overwhelmed by this game. Sometimes in intervals. Sometimes all at once. That is an echievement in and of itself. Why Eroge VNs manage to grab me is beyond my comprehension, I have made it my aim to play at least one per year, because they always leave a mark.

Like a chainsaw on my soul.

The fourth game was Sonic for the Sega Mega Drive and I refuse to call that console anything else.

I love the 16-Bit Sonics and revisiting this has been a nice blast from the past. The theme of Nature vs. Technology hit me harder this time and I really appreciate the art style and music way more these days.

Some of the level design is a bit weird but overall it's still one of my favorite games in the franchise.

The Solarpunk short story collection I'm part of has been released yesterday at the biggest bookfair of Luxembourg. It has been a surprising success and I think the first edition will be sold out by the end of today. It's only 100 copies, but it was very hard to gage how big interest would be.

I'm very proud to be part of that first issue and hope I make it into the second one as well...
