30 minutes lost to wondering why this R code is suddenly throwing an error "object 'True' not found".

... in R, it's just called "T" 😑

vam103,

@christianp Well sometimes it is 'T', other times its 'TRUE' and sometimes even 'Y' (thanks nls_multstart).

vam103, to security

Apparently NS&I (the old UK National Savings, as they put it "the government savings bank") have launched two factor authentication, which is good.

Except, it told me to expect a code, you would think through SMS. But no, its a phone call. To make matters worse its from France according to my phone! So of course I thought it had been compromised and wrote to them.

No, apparently they use a French company to do the OTP codes and then mask this with the UK number normally, except when it messes up or I guess your security is so high it does not show it. Actually the reply seemed annoyed that I did not just accept that the UK government bank would use a French company to do their security.

So I do not think much of the " improved security " until I can register a FIDO key or the local code generator as a call from France seems to have lots of points of failure. (Its not that its France specifically, just that it is another country.) Also they should mention this on their website! (Unless missed it).

Tom Scott put up a video in June saying he'd take a hiatus in six months, but now it's been taken private.

@clacke
If you get his newsletter (archive going to be open soon) he does say the next one is the last before the sabbatical.

Well have to keep the York alumni promoted.

On that I have been watch a bit of @mattgrayyes 's new stuff and its pretty good.

Also discovered the Technical Difficulties and was instantly transported back to a combination of University and BBC Radio 4. There is a podcast as well as the YouTube channel. Even a guest appearance from @standupmaths.

On the latter, just started "A problem squared" which is the new excitement in podcasts for me.

Scans #SocialMedia feeds.
Man, people are angry about all sorts of things. I get that it is important to be angry about #Tech feudalism, #wars #climatechange but sometimes I wonder what will all this yelling achieve?

vam103,

@liztai

Are they even yelling at the correct people who can do something about the situation or just with a bunch of similarly minded people? Then is the yelling just the filtered yelling that the platform wants to support?

Although I suppose it is like water, it seems not to have an effect at the start but eventually it splits the boulder.

But then this a true of most protests, a vocal minority shout about the "injustice" and then everything goes back to normal, unless a majority agree (and can do anything about it) or its a major PR issue. You probably will not even see it in the news unless it fits the plan for outrage.

I lived in #Perth for a year. And one of my fondest memories of Perth were the ravens. Those suckers were the size of chickens, I swear. They would perch on top of dumpsters or trees and stare at you with those beady little eyes, as if they were plotting your murder, and then they let out this long kaaaaaAAAWWWAAAH????
As if they are asking, "wtf you doin' here mate?"
Good times. 😆

Oh yes, great birds... Until you have one for 3+ months bashing on your window, all day, everyday with the look of a crazy bird. Never have a seen such unity on the floor as to the hatred of that bird!

(Who now has been called Greg. They had a friend/wife/therapist Raven hang out on the wall but they seem to have given up on poor Greg too. There definitely seemed to be a "He's not with me and I do not know him," vibe going on)

This is not the real question ... the real question might be coming soon. But first ...

If I'm "doing things" on my laptop:

(a) Can I use OBS to record the screen and audio?

(b) What other software might I use to record screen and audio?

Windows 10 (to start with).

Brief initial indications are of the most value ... long and detailed answers are not really needed.

Yet.

Boosts for reach would be welcome if you're happy doing so.

(And thank you)

vam103,

@ColinTheMathmo

a) as with most people I have used OBS for the lectures and other training videos (Windows and Linux). The scene shifter is really useful. Also the ability to stream has been useful too since Zoom decided to hate RStudio.

b) PowerPoint even has a screen recording function in it, which I think may even work outside the application.

Although do make sure you check the settings, including the hidden ones in about:config like gfx.webrender.all = TRUE and the anti-fingerprinting ones.

vam103,

@ColinTheMathmo @narain
Well yes and no. Having spent the week dealing with settings that stopped webpages loading after following
https://github.com/milgradesec/firefox-settings

Which actually is a good set of settings (turns out most do not need to run off to about:config just the regular settings) but I learnt about not doing the windows specific things or the jit things and I still use quad9 for the DNS.

Mostly I pick things up as I go but the new rust webrender engine was just a hidden gem.

Wild how the same university that wanted to reduce my paid hours by 20 minutes each day to account for lunch breaks also wants me to come in on Saturdays to help with open days.

vam103,

@christianp
At least your open day is on a Saturday... Ours was on a Sunday. Mind you with the flexitime you do get to claim one day during the week...

Of course this is going to make you more enthusiastic about your university... 👿

Note to self: Zoom mutes me on entering a meeting, but Teams doesn't.
Sorry to the 12 people who had to hear my absent-minded humming while we waited for this session to start

vam103,

@christianp I think I had to set up Zoom to default to mute everyone and turn off their videos, plus stop that incessant dinging as everyone enters the room (pretty bad when doing a lecture/tutorial). Teams seems to end up with random muting and constant video being off. Mind you it also breaks the webcam (okay it's a cheap one from Aldi) everytime.

I am still getting my head around the idea that a chat can continue after a meeting on Teams.

@christianp At the time I thought it was a reason for another migration from the dark place.
