@bw @csilverman With so few consumer devices sold with low-resolution screens these days, it's been a while since I gave the 16px size much love or attention.

(Which is weird for me to say, because for a year or two of my early career, they were sort of my specialty!)

IMAX movies like Oppenheimer that use 70mm film still require a Palm Pilot, and instead of rewriting the software they just made an emulator.

I don’t know why, but I love this. https://www.theverge.com/23801118/imax-movie-palm-pilot-oppenheimer

What are you looking for in your dream tools/process/workflow? What’s one change you imagine would make it super better? What’s the next improvement you plan to make?

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@davatron5000 I wish for a responsive design tool that defaults to flow-based layout, with features that inspire and delight visual designers enough to enthusiastically learn a new paradigm.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@davatron5000 Definitely a step in the right direction, but it’s still a special little opt-in frame inside of the usual freeform canvas, and it’s only recreating some layout features browsers have had for 10 years.

The tools I’ve seen that invert that relationship seem disinterested in the freeform stuff entirely, which is an equal but opposite mistake.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@davatron5000 To put it another way: When you design a site, you are precisely positioning a static canvas, which (in Figma anyway) may contain some responsive elements.

But when you build the site, you are composing a responsive canvas, which may contain static elements.

As long as that’s the case, one will always require decoding the yoda-speak of the other to uncover its intent and constraints (in the absence of deep collaboration, anyway).

if you used to be bad at web design and now you’re pretty good, what helped you get better? I often feel like I’m not improving even though I make a fair number of websites

(asking about visual design/UX design here, NOT html/css/js)

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@b0rk Things that helped me improve (IMO):

  • Life drawing classes, taught me tricks for seeing things objectively as they are.

  • Variety of experience. Designing for the web, native, B2B, transactional apps, marketing pages, games, etc.

  • Always looking for inspiration outside of web/digital.

  • Regularly asking if what we’ve designed is uniquely well suited to the project, or if it could work for anything. If it’d work for anything, what unique opportunities have we overlooked?

Which of them have you NEVER used?

I always had the feeling that there's rather too many of these attribute selectors, and that they were optimized for a use case that was cancelled a long time ago.

OK, URLs. But other than that?

Today I will write the first few #css #book pages of the #Selector part.

My request: please tell me about your cool, non-obvious selector tricks. I'd love to include a few in the book.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@ppk It’s simple, but selecting all children of a pseudo class without that pseudo class is still kind of magic: https://cloudfour.com/thinks/our-surprisingly-simple-navigation-hover-effect/

Might be obsolete once Firefox ships :has support, though? 🤔

@horuskol@phpc.social avatar

I don't know what it is that I do to the DualShock 5, but the two controllers I bought with the #PlayStation5 just over a year ago are unusable :(

Both started with a minor twitch to the left and then rapidly progressed to stuck on full left, making any kind of play untenable.

Compare with the two DS4 controllers I had on PS4 for years on end.

#PS5

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@horuskol Oh, what a bummer! They’re expensive, too 😓

When you say they’re stuck on left, is there a physically stuck joystick or it’s sending the wrong input? (Mine are holding up fine so far, just curious)

Remade my personal upgrading it from the good old Server Side Includes to Astro! I kept the design fairly simple (= I'm not a designer so that is a sensible thing to do). The site should be fairly accessible too.

In the fashion I now have a more or less old fashioned page for links. Maybe interesting for you, maybe not.

@5t3ph Happy birthday! 🎉

My favorite thing about CSS at the moment continues to be grid. I was recently struggling with elements I was layering with absolute positioning, then remembered I could use overlapping rows and columns instead. So dang versatile!

Mastodon is clearly split into two groups: people who want a safe and closed community, and people who want a Twitter-like pool with everyone in it. Does its design really have enough wiggle room keep both groups happy at once? I’m not so sure, but it’ll be interesting to see.
