Today’s baking adventures: I made pizza dough, Persian tea raisin spiced cookies, and made a riff on pain de mie using spelt flour and labneh

Sadly I don’t have a Pullman loaf tin

The worst thing about making bread is having to wait for it to cool before I can eat it

All of last year I hoarded film. I found people who were ‘getting out of film’ and bought their entire stash (at least 25 rolls at a time). Now I am down to my last 10 rolls of 120 film, and feeling very anxious.

My husband just narced me out to the kids for getting Halo top faux ice cream after work, and that is a BOLD MOVE for a person that I just witnessed eating a big bag of gummies while they were at school this afternoon.

Welcome to the May 31st BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? I've seen so many more people riding around recently. It may be because of warm weather, or because of Bike Month. What local cycling trends have you seen?

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@ascentale I’ve been puzzled by the grown men riding children’s sized very small framed bikes trend. Maybe BMX? but they are tiny. Do you know anything about that?

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@cainmark @ascentale it feels like a thing people are consciously choosing!

A review of H Mart in San Francisco

I wondered through the aisles clutching my shopping list like a talisman against the near-overwhelming desire to buy more than I could possibly carry home. I probably looked confused, and I was a little confused, but more than anything I was overwhelmed with joy.

@dys_morphia I love this place

I randomly wandered into a dumpling shop I’ve never heard of next to SFSU and, well I think I’ve found my favorite xiaolongbao in the city. It’s better than all the more famous ones!!

It’s called Mom Dumpling in park Merced. They make their own dumpling dough AND noodles. The crab and pork xlb is especially good, almost as good as the good ones I’ve had in Taiwan and Shanghai

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

It’s also like way cheaper

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@jawnsy if you go in the afternoon there is also 10% discount!

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@eniatitova yeah I wanna try the poke place next

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@jawnsy that’s why I have a food coma

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@eniatitova it’s not bad but it’s not my preferred style of dumplings. I find northern Chinese style very bland and simple, and I prefer fancier southern style ones with seafood especially. It’s very good for that style of dumpling

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@jawnsy Dumpling Home, Dumpling Story, Dumpling Park, Dumpling House ahahah I only like dumpling park (their noodles are not good but their appetizers and dumplings are all good)

I find the rest of them exceedingly gentrified. If you want to head out of the city, Din Ding and Bing’s Dumplings are way better but Mom Dumplings are very good

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@jawnsy people really like Yuanbao Baozi but I don’t like it at all. It looks like it should be good (handmade etc) but it’s very bland for my taste. You can also go to King of Noodles and have the spicy beef soup, and a side of dumplings that come from kingdom of dumplings across the street (that only sells frozen bags to go)

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@jawnsy I won’t complain about going to dumpling home, but I never want to stand in line for them. I think they opened dumpling story in pac heights which is the same food, but no line. Decent but Mom Dumplings are better and wayyyy cheaper

@eniatitova @jawnsy I feel that way about most of the west side Chinese: it’s okay, not really my style, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it (I’d go to Millbrae and Fremont for dumplings), but like most city Chinese food, I’ll be okay with some of the places if I’m in the area!

Corporate greed looks like:

There’s a wonderful co-op grocery in SF called Rainbow (even if you don’t geek out over food, especially quality food, it’s worth a visit - the bulk section alone is impressive).

We shop there a lot. They sell items for less (and sometimes by a large amount) than Whole Foods or other chain places do that you would assume have scale and purchasing power.

Rainbow is a single business and again, a worker-owned co-op.

Now why is that? $$$$$

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@nazhamid I love their bulk coffee beans and tea and also the spices. They sometimes have this tempeh called Surata (from Oregon) that I think is the only tempeh here that tastes like tempeh. Whole Foods could never haha
