So, I'm arriving in Montreal on Saturday afternoon. Who's gonna be there?

sarah11918,
@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

@mlevison For the Astro offsite/meetup! The main public event is https://lu.ma/astro-together-meetup-2024 , but our core team of maintainers is in town all week for official offsite.

2 years in and building in public, for such a high profile project, never gets easier. 😅

BUT, @astrodocs has grown SO MUCH that our original sidebar needs taming.

People speak kindly of our writing, but I bet we can help people navigate better! So after working alone behind the scenes, time to get some 👀 on this.

Hop in the (early! draft! terrible?) PR, check out the deploy preview, and leave feedback to help guide us. Need to keep earning our rep Every. Single. Day.

Thanks to the @astro dev team for including me in the minor release blog post!

We have a "the feature isn't done until the docs are done" policy, and I'm so proud to be contributing to Astro's releases.

Sneak peek of what I've been working on in my "research/exploratory" phase.

Ever since I read @grimalkina 's research paper on Developer Thriving ( https://www.pluralsight.com/resource-center/guides/developer-thriving-research-paper ), I've been trying to see how I could adapt research-based "organizational" findings to our open-source project community.

Specifically now, how can we create a community event ("conference", but is that just the only word we know?) informed by this.

sarah11918, to random
@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

Reunited, and it feels so good!

@patak and I are slowly taking over the virtual conference world together...

@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

Just a quick weekend shout out of gratitude:

I've been tasked with figuring out what "Astro Conf" should be, and the reason I feel comfortable being the person to deliver a kick-ass virtual event OF VALUE to our community is b/c of:

  • the amazing work around developer thriving (not just "productivity" or "happiness") by @grimalkina

  • the truly insightful understanding of developer "community" by @anthrocypher

Can already see how our initial ideas are captivating/resonating w our crowd.

So, @jbrains & I were both invited to give workshops at the same conference later this year (wut???).

But, as we are separate humans, we each received the same "form" email invitation and I just can't stop wondering... "They know, right? SURELY, they know? They MUST know..."

Maybe the only thing more fun than Saturday a.m. "alone time" karaoke while Joe is out running errands... realizing the new song you found would suit a nibling's voice, and messaging them to try out that song, too!

(Side note: you put out "Lower key" versions of your tracks? Instant sub and fan for life.)

Ugh. I caught COVID again. It's entirely unsurprising to be honest. My 2nd time, 1st was in January this year.

I am very understanding of everyone who is avoiding socialising because of it, and the valid frustrations they have with governments and people who just consider it gone.

I mask on public transport etc., but I still wanted to take part in stuff like the work Christmas party, which is high risk even when we ask everyone to test.

I find myself pulled in two directions on it all.

sarah11918,
@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw Ugh. Sorry to hear that, and hope both "the long and the short of it" go gentle on you this time around.💜

I feel you re: hobbies. I haven't sung with any choirs in almost four years, though they've all resumed by now. It's a painful choice, but I feel like "people who think it's ok to sing loudly for extended periods of time in close quarters in old buildings" are likely people who take other risks I wouldn't choose to take myself. So, more time for docs I guess...

Something the "just let AI draft your docs" crowd doesn't seem to get:

It's harder to turn "bad docs" into "good docs" than it is to write good docs from scratch.

Even putting aside LLMs are trained to (re)produce the "average" (and, how great are "average" docs out there?), your "bad docs" anchor you. You are primed to "fix" the odd word in place, but you now have to actively work to "envision" better.

You didn't trust yourself (were too lazy) to write. You thought editing would be easier?

sarah11918,
@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

@snugug Oh for sure that's the bigger concern! Probably the one people don't think as often about is how much harder editing is than writing... (she might have been musing this morning, avoiding some "tiny docs PRs that surely can't have needed that much editing and why aren't they just approved and merged already..." :joy: )

We just stealth-published the Astro v4.0 upgrade guide so the translators have access to it, and I am so happy with how it turned out!

v2: The first major upgrade guide I was responsible for was like, "OK WHAT even is going on here, let me turn this into something reasonable..."

v3: "OK devs, here's a template to fill out for your breaking changes so I have a fighting chance."

v4: Everyone just knows & uses the upgrade template, so I could focus on improving the structure, readability. 🚀

Friday secret Mastodon exclusive... we haven't publicized that it exists yet, but... https://contribute.docs.astro.build/ has been my personal project over the last few weeks.

Did you think Astro Docs would be satisfied with a single CONTRIBUTING.md ?? We're gonna doc, and we're gonna doc doc'ing!

I'll be unveiling this and other @astro maintainers' personal side projects next week: all the things your Astro maintainers build to make maintaining and contributing to Astro easier for us all!

Stay tuned!

@astro won the GitHub universe Audience Choice Award last week, for

> a project that has helped them create an impact

It sure feels like WE create an impact, by all the comments I read from ppl who feel our docs, dx, tooling, tutorial, community and entire thoughtfully-crafted and developed project enables and empowers both newer devs and those just "too old for this shit" alike.

But, that people feel like THEY are creating THEIR own impact WITH Astro?

That's joy on a whole n'other level.

I just realized that @grammargirl might know the answer to a question that has plagued me for years!

"agree vs concur" -- I "heard"
somewhere long ago that to concur is to arrive at or accept the same conclusion/agree with a conclusion either despite not being fully onboard with the reason/logic or arguments that led to it, or getting there for diff reasons entirely.

So, it lets you "disagree" on some principle while also, ultimately "agreeing", I guess?

Is there any basis or truth to this?

sarah11918, to random
@sarah11918@mastodon.social avatar

When software confs have A docs panel/talk, I often wish I could draw the comparison for the audience: "K, what if this ENTIRE CONFERENCE had a (one, single) web dev talk?"

You might keep hearing the same things at "the docs talk" because this is our one chance to scream things like "user empathy!" and "navigation!" while we have the stage. In truth, literally every sentence spoken could be its own talk... it's own conference.

Can be a real challenge to develop peeps/practice this way.

I know there were valid tech reasons for @astro to move to @vite, but I'm personally most happy about the excuse to join forces with such a(nother) wonderful community!

I hope you've got your (free!) ticket for ViteConf (online!), because it is shaping up to be the web dev event of the year! So many frameworks represented in the session talks, streamed for 24 hours straight for our global community!

(You might see a little more of me than you bargained for, but don't hold it against them.)
