I mean, just how cool are octopodes?? 🐙

reuvenim,

@daniel The coolest, by far. Crabs are the second coolest.

Well this is coming at an unfortunate time

reuvenim,

@daniel What did you do to it???
(Hope the fix is not too traumatic)

reuvenim,

@daniel Always new Macs and games don't go together.
(BTW, hope you get better, too!)

Whenever I read about research relating to the effects of salt, I can’t help but wonder why the Japanese seem to be living so well into elderly ages (let’s face it, much better than the west) given how much soy sauce they’re consuming https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/aug/27/salt-free-diet-reduce-risk-heart-problems-20-per-cent

reuvenim,

@dave I suspect you’re right, but a lot of research (this one included) point a finger at salt in particular. I don’t pretend to know, I’m just amazed that in the 21st century did science is still not really able to say what’s good for us and what’s bad for us, food wise.

reuvenim,

@dave Thanks for an illuminating answer!

reuvenim,

@dave a couple of years ago, I read the book Spoon Fed (https://books.apple.com/au/book/spoon-fed/id1477280673). Among other things, it said that tests such as the one you’re talking about are possible, but actually come in the form of multiple tests + the results aren’t valid for too long, either.
Plenty of room for food science to grow into!

reuvenim,

@dave It was, but I hear conflicting advice all the time. For example, Spoon Fed argues breakfast is probably redundant and better avoided (it’s more nuanced than that), whereas Peter Attia claims that the main benefit of ditching breakfast is in overall calorie reduction rather than skipping breakfast itself. So who’s right? Why am I having to rely on people’s opinions?

reuvenim,

@dave For me it depends. Most days I’m perfectly fine without breakfast, sometimes I just feel hungry in the morning and solve it with a breakfast. Regardless, I know that if I don’t have breakfast, I shouldn’t have a late lunch or I’d feel awful.
So yes, we’re deep into the realm of “it depends” 🤦‍♂️

reuvenim,

@dave Yes, coffee comes to my rescue to many times 🥳 (also helps in the weight loss department!)

It's always encouraging when a website you need to use seeks access to your device's motion sensors. Nothing dodgy there!

  • reuvenim,

@decryption dear sir, I’d like to protest against a statement you’ve made in today’s newsletter. In relation to snowy hydro, you said: “it's kinda sad we are still clinging on to it as the last great infrastructure project Australia managed to pull off”.
    What about NBN??!?

    (Sorry, had to 😋)

I know the English are still smarting from The Ashes, but that’s no excuse for playing the football equivalent of Bodyline Cricket. These fouls are just blatant. You’d be forgiven for thinking that they’re hoping to win by literally wearing the bodies down with fouls.

    reuvenim,

@liampomfret I have no love for the English, but I disagree. They’re very tactical, but there are plenty of teams way more cynical.

@decryption Thanks for a new app idea to add to my ever growing list of apps I would like to write for myself. I can already picture it running in my head, and I've already done similar stuff in SwiftUI. Alas, life comes in between me and fun things.

    reuvenim,

    @decryption Don't hold your breath 😿

Do we accept a standard where we have to individually manage each of our websites in order to have them block each individual AI engine from using them for AI learning (but only in the future, because no one cared about us till now), and then hope that those AI engines actually comply (because it doesn't look like Google, for a start, intends to)? https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/openai-details-how-to-keep-chatgpt-from-gobbling-up-website-data/

    reuvenim,

@dave Definitely, I just wish I had the time to embark on such glorious adventures…

I have this problem with Apple TV where A LOT of episodes are marked as played even if I havent watched them. Like here, the first ep is unplayed but the second and third are played. Anyone know why this might be?

    reuvenim,

@daniel It's interesting to read how different people have different issues with this. In my case, I have 2 issues:

    1. If I start watching an episode and a new one comes out, it assumes I finished that episode.
    2. On some shows, I'm getting what you're getting: it always assumes I'm on the last episode even if I haven’t watched the predecessors. That tends to happen if I watch sporadic episodes rather than sequentially, especially if that sporadic episode isn't the latest.

  • reuvenim,

@decryption You’re making it sound as if 48kHz is bad. Sure, it’s not as good as 4 times that, but it’s better than CD quality.
Regardless of these disagreements, I’m very much enjoying Atmos through the Apple TV.

    reuvenim,

@decryption I totally get that and I totally agree. And it’s not like the Apple TV doesn’t have the power, either.

    reuvenim,

@decryption before Atmos, I’d use a DAC and feed my receiver with the analog signal. But my DAC only does stereo.

@decryption Have a look at this new receiver from Denon, that’s designed with it acting as a pre-amp (much more than usual) https://www.soundandvision.com/content/denon-avr-x3800h-av-receiver-review

  • reuvenim,

@decryption A year or 2 before the game was released, the developers were giving away similar pins at PAX to people who had no idea what the game is (because it wasn't out yet…). Child is proudly wearing it on their school uniform! (So far without being told off)
