gasp

when @radiofreelunch extremely generously offered to send me a "couple" old Newtons, i balked. i had an old MP2100 years ago, and it was tough to get software loaded on them, even with all the correct hardware

driving home an hour later, i thought: what the hell is wrong with me, i'm turning down a free newton?! 😅

a week later, this amazingly heavy bundle of Newtons and Newton peripherals arrived. thank you good sir :D

Pictured:

Newton Fax Modem (battery-powered!)

there is extensive battery leak/corrosion from the AA batteries on each of them, so they'll spend the next few months getting some TLC. hopefully most survive!

@vga256 You’re welcome! (One of those wasn’t in the box, so I was only off by one at the time.)

Didn’t realize they were damaged, I guess it’s been a while since I fired one up.

@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 It actually has a rechargeable battery!

Been trying to figure out how to phrase the next era of my / studio

If it's my partner and I making games, but she's a very silent artist partner and wants zero exposure, do I just roll the "single creator" angle?

It feels weird, but also a lot of single creator games sure have lots of contractors so shrug?

Like if I say "couple", EVERYONE gonna zero in on that. The angle they'll want is couple interviews. And, well. No.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg I think I usually say “small studio” if it comes up.

I noticed you said “we” on the podcast, FWIW.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg Don’t ask me for up to date trends, but it still feels wrong to hog all the credit even though I’m the only full time person.

And everyone gets into the credits. This always seems like a way we can do better as indies, compared to the AAA studios.

@newtontalk A friend said people here might be interested in Newton devices. I think I will keep the 2000 (so I can theoretically run my software) but the others are available to anyone who wants to pay shipping from Tacoma, WA. (Preferably as a set.)

@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Thanks! I want them to go to a good home. Not sure they all work, but maybe you can use the modem to dial in to your retro network. ☎️

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Do you want a Go tablet? I think the screen is busted (should say “PenPoint” and it’s probably as heavy as all the others combined… This one is probably just going to recycle.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 I think it has a hard disk too, I heard some spinning.

radiofreelunch, to random
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Probably not your thing but I have a bunch of old Newton devices. I think I want to keep one to see my software but want a home for the others. (My very minimal search didn’t turn up anywhere that people were wanting them.)

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@newtontalk Yes, worked on Newton Book Reader and the outline notes. And did a game that Apple paid us for but never released because they decided that they needed to be for business.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@newtontalk I don’t think so. Apple probably wanted us to delete when our contract ended.

(Might have the NewtonScript version of Jigsaw Strategy Game http://www.pensee.com/pensee/products/ourProducts.html)

Our granddaughter used to call it “the bunny game” (I think she hadn’t learned to read at the time she was playing it).

i have become addicted to the local government surplus sales warehouse. today i picked up this magazine turnstile that once graced some sad gov’t department atrium

it is now repurposed to live what it was born to do: let me pretend i’m living in my even sadder childhood fantasy computer store 🫡

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 It very much has that vibe!

Is your retro collection needing anything in particular? I’m about to do some downsizing and may have a few random software boxes (not sure if I still have some Mac games my dad bought in 1984). Not sure how terrible shipping is if you do want anything …

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Just went through a box that was 27 pounds, though some of that is probably the data floppies and the Print Explosion catalog. But here’s some stuff you might want.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 looks like the attachments didn’t?

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 hah, that’s my own files, I think I will hold on.

At least you’re going for smaller stuff, I still might ask you for postage.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Alas, looks like the disk from Q&D is elsewhere. Maybe a few others if you want?

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Did you want the box & manual? And the other system software?

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 I’m keeping this one!

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Have no idea but it may actually be a precursor to PowerPoint (we used to plot overhead presentations IIRC). I remember one of the actual artists trying to explain kerning to me because the results were kind of primitive (but allowed more people to make slides for quick briefings).

for years i've dreamt of having my own tile-based RPG engine that would make lo-fi win95/macOS 9 spiderweb software style games like Realmz or Exile or Avernum

after so much hand-wringing about being unsure about the feasibility of building one from the ground up (the ground in this case being the love2d framework), i started yesterday. a couple hours later i've got the beginnings of a 2d tile editor. scrolling tiles, random terrain generation, drag and drop all work.

this is something that took me months to mould AGS into doing using a bunch of hacks and various script modules. there is no doubt now that i was trying to build a house by swinging a screwdriver at nails.

there's this theme in game development i've heard over and over: "if you want to make a game, never ever build your own engine." i've even given people that advice over the years. and after 12+ years of doing this stuff, i realize that i gave some terrible advice.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 I think it depends on what you call an engine. I can’t imagine doing Six Ages with anything but our scripting language, but I saw no need to reinvent drawing.

radiofreelunch,
@radiofreelunch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 I have worked on engines that did that sort of thing. But these days that seems like a waste.

I’m doing another domain specific language though!

@maxim I just had one of those and got very little boost. I agree with not discounting too fast, but you need to be 20% for Steam to email people who have wish listed you. https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/marketing/discounts
