City of Port Phillip councillor: “You can’t ride your bike and bring home your groceries. You can’t take your kids to their dance classes, or bring parcels home, or use the bike if you’re elderly, disabled or infirm." East St Kilda mum: "please tell that councillor I do all my shopping, kinder pick ups and swimming lessons on my bike. And my friends would do it too if they weren’t so afraid of cars 🤦🏻‍♀️"

Do you ride with parcels, with groceries, to drop your kids off, or while being elderly, infirm or disabled? Your City of Port Phillip councillors might not know that you even exist--- they claimed none of these things were possible! Please help educate them--- send us an action photo, or tag us in on social media. #cycling #melbourne #naarm #CityOfPortPhillip #StKilda

BIKESPOT project is on once again! You can mark the map where you feel unsafe or safe riding your bike. Port Phillip Bicycle Users Group (and other advocacy groups) uses this data to inform our advocacy work, so it's really appreciated if you can participate. #cycling #melbourne #naarm #BikeLanes @fedibikes @ajsadauskas https://www.bikespot.org/
(Edited to add: this is NATIONAL, not just for melbs! go to it, interstate friends!)

portphillipbug,

@fedibikes
Hear hear: "this should be a protected bike lane [on Kerferd Rd], plenty of room for it" #BikeSpot #melbourne #BikeLane

At Port Phillip Council tonight, councillors claimed that "you can't ride a bike if you're grocery shopping, if you''re dropping your kid at dance class, if you've got a couple of kids to take somewhere, if you're old, if you're disabled, if you don't want to get wet". It's like they haven't seen a bike outside of the Tour de France! #cycling #melbourne #CoPP #BikeLanes

portphillipbug,

@enobacon Yes, that's so important! The Option 2, that wasn't recommended, was for a narrow protected bike lane, which would have excluded trikes and wider trailers--- exactly the people who might need the protection the most!

Council is considering the much-postponed bike lane this Wednesday. You can support the bike lane by writing to mayor Heather Cunsolo heather.cunsolo@portphillip.vic.gov.au or by coming along to Council 6.30pm Wed 18th October, St Kilda Town Hall or online (register by 4pm Wednesday). portphillipbug,

@TheWarOnCars A great point about why people freak out about bike lanes: "This is the fight they CAN win"
