I started playing #FarCry6 yesterday and hooo boy…

Of course most people already bitched about this being yet another reskin of FC3, but as this is my first FC game since 3, I have a different bone to pick.

FC6 is trying to be… political? But as this is a Ubisoft game they try extremely hard not to be political – i.e. be extremely biased towards neoliberalist capitalism without acknowledging that AT ALL.

I've been trying for 1.5 hours now to figure out how to use a debugger in and am reminded once again that this entire language is an enormous fucking garbage fire, especially considering documentation.

Garg intentionally misrepresenting people being worried about the chosen board members of his new 501c3 and not even acknowledging the problems there is another huge red flag and all I need to know that the stone has begun rolling on Mastodons demise.

It's still going to take years, maybe even a decade or more and there's going to be detractors saying everything is fine, but make no mistake, the process has started and it's time to make plans to keep fedi independent.

I just got my first used laptop, so obviously I'm taking that with me.

I get to the local "Kreiswehrersatzamt" – the German conscription office.

I hand in my papers and sit down in the lobby.

I take out my laptop… and proceed to play Unreal Tournament with volume at full blast.

Last night was exhausting.

Wanted to migrate my homeserver from #ZFS to UFS and thought it would take maybe 2 hours.

After all, the new drives were already formatted and mounted – so just copy all the data around, adjust loader.conf and write an fstab.

It took me over 12 hours due to various fuckups and me wanting to make some baseline improvements to the boot process.

The speakers of the FORT prototype are now painted bright pink for hopefully at least some protection against water and had some custom grills added.

The one on the woofer might rattle a bit (will have to test), but the ones on the tops are resting on rubber pads and I even managed to add some bevel to them to make some space for the membrane moving forward.

First field test probably tomorrow afternoon at Camp++. :3

Electro-engineers of fedi, what software can you recommend for developing ?

Mainly looking for circuit design, but interested in anything.

I don't have fancy needs. I don't need circuit simulation. I DO need a proper component catalog and to be able to wire up two things directly without the thing bitching about overlaps or whatever.

Something forcing me to figure out the geometry of all my connections when defining what is connected to what is worse than useless for me.

I absolutely hate current state of #FOSS #UI toolkits.

We have QT 3-6 and GTK 2-4, all in parallel with no consistent way to set themes, fonts etc.

For both Toolkits, you essentially have to run the associated desktop environment to easily administer their looks, and that probably (haven't run them in 15+y) only works for the particular toolkit version they use.

So you essentially have to run Gnome and KDE at the same time, which is a literally impossible ask.

I see firefox is back on its "let's allocate more than three times the amount of total system memory, cause repeated freezes and eventually get oom-killed" bullshit…

It keeps doing this shit like every two years for a couple releases in a row and I'm becoming convinced that this is a recurring regression that they just don't bother testing… -_-

I really should make video tutorials for my physical projects at some point… :thaenkin:

Not a single video tutorial for furniture I've ever seen even attempts the sort of maintain- and sustainability considerations informing my designs.

With these popular DIY videos, everything is glued and screwed together so parts can't even be replaced – everything is essentially throwaway furniture.

A point in the discussion I at least haven't seen talked about yet: Blocking meta by default in code.

I'm in the process of completely rewriting my datajournalism webframework and have repeatedly thought about fedi/AP integration – and at least for this, as a tool where privacy and security are somewhere between very important and absolutely paramount, blocking access by surveillance capitalist platforms by default seems like a very prudent thing to do.

Currently porting the TLS clientcert stuff from my old framework to my new site. Together with the (now proven to be time-stable) SHA3 password storage this marks the first time I'm building multi-factor authentication.

And all without annoying one time login tokens coming in through SMS or E-Mail.

After thinking about it a bunch, I have decided that I'll refactor my cryptographic deadhand to use python-gnupg until the sequoia-sop python bindings are released.

The official #GPGME bindings are just too damn broken to be of any real use – and I think that says a lot.

Honestly, I'm not at all sure how people can release something like that as "production grade" (for security-critical tooling, no less) and not feel deeply ashamed.

What software you use is a political choice.

There are clear dynamics of control at play here. And a corporate monopoly like Google enjoys with the web will always transform the entire affected ecosystem into a dystopian hellscape.

Their WEI shit locking down the web is just the latest in a long history of dystopian shitfuckery by tech corporations.

I'm not sure how many international lefties are aware of this, but in German-speaking leftist spaces there is a deep fault-line around the """Israel-Palestine question""" (oh my, I can't hold all the red flags and dogwhistles suddenly gushing out everywhere).

There are two extremely vocal camps, "Anti-Imperialists" and "Anti-Germans", who both broadly apply black-and-white morality as well as a hardline "with us or against us" logic of exclusion.

@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

I thought the #blender UI was horrible – and I don't think I'm wrong about that, but by now I see that it's way worse that there's this entire meta that isn't ever mentioned.

This includes (but might not be limited to) anything about the engineering of blender projects, i.e. how to structure projects and their components like animations to be maintain- and reusable, how to make them play well with exports or even what kind of data can be exported at all.

Okay, so my salary arrived and… I think I'm about to blow 600 bucks (i.e. over half of my monthly net income) on a CPU?

I can't even tell if this is stupid, principled prioritization or neither…

Up to now the most expensive thing I bought in my entire life is the 400€ RX 6600 XT in this box and this will be 150% of that…

I'd just like to interject for a moment.

What you’re referring to as #GitHub, is in fact, Microsoft® GitHub, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, those bastards who still support #ICE.

GitHub is not a system of oppression unto itself, but rather another controlled component of a fully oppressive capitalist system made useful by tireless lobbying, shell companies and rotting essential infrastructure comprising a fully oppressive system as envisioned by our glorious leader, AYN RAND.

I got at least 26 mosquito bites within 15 minutes yesterday.

Of all the flying insects apparently the only one to survive in numbers are fucking mosquitoes.

Usually, I'm staunchly on the side of conservationism, but with these fuckers, I'm tempted to introduce some invasive species to make sure they go extinct… :F

I recently found out that there's a show based on Twisted Metal, the PSX-era vehicular combat game.

And quite honestly, it's way better than a game adaptation has any right to be, much less something as niche as Twisted Metal.
