“IGN Entertainment acquires Eurogamer, GI, VG247, Rock Paper Shotgun and more

New owner makes redundancies across the Gamer Network portfolio”

Woooow. There’s so few independent sites left, most major sites are now under the same roof.

Matrix is quite possibly the single most frustrating communication platform I have ever used. I got logged out of a server, so had to log back in, entered my user, password, key, and still I can't read things that have been posted. It makes contributing to conversations almost impossible and wastes the time of contributors.

omglinux,
@omglinux@mastodon.social avatar

@popey Interesting — Got a few self-esteem points back reading this! I've tried using Matrix a few times in the past but it's never been smooth — or even successful! Assumed it was a me problem, but hearing your experience suggests not. Matrix is clearly great — I see/hear it promoted a lot, so it can't be all bad — but there appear to be hurdles, and when you want to communicate/collab, those hurdles end up eating into would-be contributor's time.

@rasmus91 @cassidy if you’re inclined to work that way, work that way - you do you, my friend! 🙌 I, however, don’t work thay way. I regularly need (or want) to work with multiple windows that are ‘not relevant to each other’ in any arbitrary sense. It boosts my productivity having everything to hand. 😃 I also dont think any extension “encourages” anything to any real degree; we choose what to install to complement our workflows, and if it doesn’t suit, remove.

omglinux,
@omglinux@mastodon.social avatar

@rasmus91 @cassidy Which all sounds lovely but I confess: I don't see an issue with having multiple windows open in the same space. Maybe I'm a neanderthal 👹. It's something people already do, and will do without this extension. In fact, this extension is pretty much explicitly aimed at people who work that way and want to 'tweak' it. Are you saying mixed window working should be discouraged?

@scottytrees I've not seen The Batman - and I really, really want to! I have actually seen Conan before but I don't remember watch, and I do enjoy a good 80s mindless "brain switch off" film, and as a fan of He-Man, fantasy, and "swords and sorcery", I should give it another shot!

I'm digging Nautilus' new split-pane look in GNOME 45 - https://www.omglinux.com/nautilus-split-pane-gnome-45/

omglinux,
@omglinux@mastodon.social avatar

@krafting Yup, you can still move window controls to the left (literally had just checked a few minutes before your reply). Controls don't look strange on the left but, in the case of Nautilus, as the new sidebar is narrow and now shows a title, they do make things a little crowded.
