One of the apps I work on suddenly became super slow on device during debug with Xcode 15.4. Everything lags, basically unusable.

Tried restarting everything, deleting derived data for the project. Still the same.

Any know whats up? And how to fix it? 🙏

Other projects work fine, this was working fine on previous Xcode version.

how do people set the colours of their shortcuts? shortcutTileColor doesn’t seem to do anything 🤔

🤔 I’m a firm believer that everything Jack touches turns to 💩

This is good news for Bluesky but let's not forget who and what got them there. https://mastodon.social/@docpop/112390119259207355

@MuseumShuffle@mastodon.social avatar

Well, it's official. Museum Shuffle is listed in the "What's New in Apps" section of the App Store in at least Germany.

Thank you @stefanblos for confirming it!

I would have made this update much nicer if I knew this was going to happen. 😭😂

@MuseumShuffle @stefanblos congratz!

Did you fill that form asking for featuring?

Needed to turn off Screen Time temporarily. Apple: “bollocks to you, then”. Infers the set-up is wiped and has me start from scratch. I go through the set-up, and it merges the new one with what was already there. But the block set-ups have been randomly wiped.

Stellar UX, there, Apple. Parents rejoicing. Etc.

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@gklka @craiggrannell @krzyzanowskim @kkolakowski not to even mention the Screen Time APIs which are quite unstable and some features are just not working and the official Apple response is “get your users to upgrade to iOS 17” 😵‍💫

A new blog post after a while 🎉

Wrote about my experience with the "Blinkist trial" in @switchbuddy .

So far it seems to be a success.

I really enjoy that with #Python (or rather with PyCharm IDE) I can just run single file in a couple of seconds to see the results.

Makes it super easy to test initial approach and stuff in general.

And if I need the DB or something else, I can just use #Django management command 🎉

Got rid of some Apple boxes over the weekend. They are pretty but take up a lot of space in a smaller apartment and I am not gonna need them 🤷‍♂️

It felt bit difficult so I think it was a right choice.

I have recently implemented this "Blinkist trial" to get more people to try paid version of @switchbuddy and looking at the data it seems to be success.

My trial conversion rate went down, but the start rate went up quite a bit and so far this month I got more new customers than in January with fewer total downloads. 🙂

The goal was to get more people to experience the full version of the app instead of running into limits scattered through the app.

Will report after 400 days how it went 😅

It is currently discounted and the sale ends tonight on EU eShop.

@webology yea sometimes I had longer pauses in the story and it seemed to getting quite stale so I progressed and suddenly there is tons of stuff.

I also sort of figured the sushi business, sometimes I am selling just that one "sushi set" and can rake up to 30k a night 😀

Would you pay $5-$10 per app per year to be automatically notified when your app is featured on the App Store?

@simonbs I am nor getting featured so 🤷🏻‍♂️ and people that are are probably already paying for AppFigures or similar

⬇️ This is a nice write-up about using SQLite in production, with pitfalls and open questions.

😓 I cringe whenever I see some Django/Python luminary recommending people use SQLite in production. I don’t care how good you are, you won’t get it right even if you think you did. Then, someone will read your advice and contact @djangonews to ask why their production database disappears every time they deploy their website or unexpectedly. https://fosstodon.org/@anze3db/111765707787892711

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@webology @djangonews 🫣🫣🫣

I am not recommending SQLite but I am using it in my read-heavy projects and I am quite happy with it.

It is straightforward, easy to backup and restore. Postgres is quite intimidating and last time I did Ubuntu upgrade I had to somehow upgrade the Postgres cluster and I had no idea what was happening.

Managed DB is different story but the cost is quite high for hobby projects.

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@webology @djangonews I should probably look into managed solution even to just be familiar with it.

I think maybe folks often have one managed DB for multiple projects or is that bad practice? Because this for me would be huge cost difference.

Another thing is that my projects are in multiple Digital Ocean datacenters which is probably fail on my part 😅

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@carlton @webology my thinking was that DB by Digital Ocean costs 15$ at a minimum, so per project that would be perhaps 60$ month + the droplets.

I hope to pay this once my projects are bit further along, but I also pay Sentry, domains, backup space so it unfortunately isn't insignificant cost for me.

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@carlton @webology right but I need the droplets in the same data center right? otherwise the latency will be a problem?

nemecek_f,
@nemecek_f@iosdev.space avatar

@carlton @webology I will wait for the blog articles and then see what it entails 😆

One of the nice things about SQLite is that I can just copy it to my machine in seconds and have the same data to work on.

So I think I would be spending more tokens with the Postgres but since you both have tons more experince with this than me, I think give it a few months and I will be like "you were right! How to migrate SQLite do managed Postgres?" 😜
