Ok @ivory users, I'm going to blow your mind:

Yesterday I wished for a yellow-card/penalty-box on Mastodon (a temp mute/block). For those times when someone MIGHT be an asshole but maybe they were just having a bad day? Or because they are posting spoilers for your fav show for the next week?

I know Mastodon has good filters buried in settings but I wanted a one or two click solution.

IVORY HAS IT BUILT IN! On a user profile you just:

  1. Click the profile menu
  2. Click filter & pick timeout!
mike,

@ethanschoonover @ivory It's all about the client....

Man, so many people on here are butthurt that the official Mastodon iOS client defaults to mastodon.social.

To force people to select a server themselves (without any knowledge of Mastodon) has caused tons of people not to use Mastodon, at all.

It’s gatekeeping for some theoretical “purity”, aka it’s bullshit.

Let people join easily. They can move servers later.

mike,
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Tend to agree, but moving isn't as trivial as it should be.

Risks that lead to centralized social media, by probability:

  1. Network effects leave incumbent platforms dominant

  2. Network effects leave incumbent platforms dominant

  3. Network effects leave incumbent platforms dominant

  4. Well-funded centralized competitors beat the fediverse

  5. Well-funded centralized competitors beat the fediverse

  6. Temporarily focusing on growing Mastodon and mastodon.social creates a new centralized behemoth

mike,

@BarrenPlanet @davidslifka This is a great point. As a an admin I suspended a long time user after several warnings but realized they needed a path to migrate so had to re-in state them. New policy is to severely restrict the account instead is suspending. Spam bots and extreme cases of course get different treatment.

    @jeff @Gargron I'm on the fence here. There's a part of me that just wants to get the user in the door and then I can try and poach them from mastodon.social later. But... These huge super instances are a big problem for many reasons. At the end of the day the fediverse needs to be spread out to be resilliant.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @ErikJonker @jeff @Gargron Maybe Ask a couple questions then randomly pick one from the criteria? Where do you live? Are regional topics important to you? What is your primary reason for using social media? If the answers are basically I don't care about any of that stuff suggest a super instance at random.

    RT/Russia Today no longer has a “state-affiliated media” label.

    Nice job, Elmo. You’re really doing great on this rapidly-declining shitshow.

    @eddie1perez But CBC gets one, lolz.

    This is looking like February/March #NHLJets "hockey" 😬

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @DaveyDov Frustrating. They give you periods where they're great. And then they go back to the garbage. It's like look we can play the right way, but we don't want to right now..

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @DaveyDov @graand That game was lost on the 5 on 3. If they attacked and scored that Vegas team would have been in collapse mode. Instead the Jets stood around. Vegas gained momentum and that was it. Now Stone's activated and it's a whole different look for Vegas. Also 55 can be shown the door any time in the off season.

    I recognize lots of folks here don't trust Bluesky, but I actually find a lot of what they're doing really, really interesting and worth watching, including their experiment with "composable moderation." https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/20/bluesky-plans-decentralized-composable-moderation/

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @mike @mmasnick I've beat this drum a lot. Everything that Bluesky is proposing can be done right now in Mastodon via the client. Open API and open source allow you to theoretically have a client that could offer you algorithmic curation/moderation of your feeds. You could even have a market place of interchangeable algorithms between clients. Open beats black box.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @mmasnick @mike That's the Buety of doing it client side. Don't want algorithms use a different app. Mastodon is the engine but all the good stuff can happen in the app.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @osma @mike @mmasnick It's just a numbers game. Back in the late 60s early 70s all moms in North America got together and decided that the only acceptable male names would be Mike, Steve, or Dave.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick @mike Here's my late night folksy version. We're all in a town square. We can talk in the town square. We can even argue in the town square. But if someone walks into the town square naked and starts urinating on everyone that person must be removed from the square and not be allowed back in. Moderation in a nutshell.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick @mike I guess my point is that it's more about setting up an environment for thoughtful discourse and realize it will never be about free speech absolutionism. There will always have to be ground rules. If everyone agrees to the boundaries then the discourse can be rich and meaningful .

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick @mike As a foil? An example of what's not acceptable? So you almost welcome violations to use as a discussion point in of themselves.

    Wow 😲

    Just discovered a decentralized and federated social network that works through the Gemini protocol.

    It's called @sequel, and you can access it here:

    gemini://sequel.space

    Right now, it operates on 2 nodes with 95 users.

    To say I'm shocked is an understatement.

    If you're unaware of the Gemini protocol, it's something that resembles HTTP and Gopher. Here's info:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemini_(protocol)

    If you want to read about @sequel on the regular web, here it is:

    Looking to get off Twitter. The one thing really keeping me there is the larger community of poets, who are inventive and fascinating but also incredibly resistant to change. So if you're on Mastodon, and a poet, and I don't follow you, hit me up so I can change that.

    Was just in Tim Hortons, and this guy said out loud, “Look at that nerd with the computer!”

    I’m sorry, someone’s a nerd because they’re drinking coffee while using a laptop?

    What is this—1983? Do you drive a Pontiac? Is your trunk full of Lucky Lager? Did you just finish watching an episode of the Littlest Hobo?

    What is it like living in a world with no computers? Is everyone just focused on showing off their sweet flow?

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Wow, that was the last time? I think the last time someone called me a nerd was line three days ago.

    mike,
    @mike@thecanadian.social avatar

    @atomicpoet There's an easy come back for that: "Fuck off"
    Or if you want to get creative
    "Fuck off idiot"

    I don't usually go begging for boosts but if you could boost this message I'd appreciate it. I'm hoping that hockey fans can all start using the #HNOM Hockey Night On Mastodon hash tag so that we can follow what's going on with fans of other clubs throughout the #StanleyCup #NHL playoffs.

    🔥 Mastodon hack for new comers.
    🎯 Rule of thumb try to have 1.5x to 2x follows to follower ratio. Its counter intuitive to what you're used to on twitter but on Mastodon you have more tools to protect you and nothing to push you content. You are the algorithm and you're responsible for filling your timeline.
    ⭐ follow without fear!
