Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

@mort Are you listening to yourself? The system which reports fewer security issues is more secure? Really? Then you should switch to , because they hide their security errors best!

mcepl,

And yet until yesterday you were using it happily persuaded that it is secure, and if Greg took over FreeBSD and start reporting CVEs on it, you would be persuaded that it is insecure as well? It is just reporting!

This is absolutely horrible. I was just looking at https://floss.social/@noelreports@mstdn.social/112433442215537630, and it made me really sick. Russian generals who sent those soldiers to these stupid situations should be really punished for this.

Whatever is their motivation, I feel sick for such horrible waste of human lives. And yes, I am afraid, that similar pictures can be made for Ukrainian soldiers, and I have friend from Dnipro, who always goes to visit her family, shares her experience and I then cannot sleep for week. It is just horrible thing everywhere.

I have been using #OsmAnd everywhere exclusively for the last fifteen or so years, and especially in Czechia it worked for me quite well (even better than in more rural parts of France or Italy, and poor Croatia … there is really a lot of work to do there!).

There is very little incentive to publish books through a publishing company. The financial incentive is truly negligible. It's nice to have professional editors, but if the book is freely available on GitHub, readers will correct your errors anyway. I don't think the promotion by a publisher does more than what you can achieve through social media. If you know how to use LaTeX, and you don't want your book to be protected by a paywall, my advice is to just make it public domain.

mcepl,
@mcepl@floss.social avatar

@BartoszMilewski

Yes and no. Depends on the type of books. Technical books, perhaps (but does anybody still read those?). But for the fiction books, good editors are a way more than just Grammarly+. Good editors made Jules Verne, Tolkien and other great writers possible. I read a lot of #fanfiction, and I can see how much 99.5% of all stories miss the hand of an editor, who would make them much better.

I grew up in the Communist Czechoslovakia (I was 18 in 1989) and I remember how reading 1984 was one of those moments where I just couldn’t believe how it was possible that somebody who never lived outside his England (well, mostly) could understand the life under the Communist totality so well. Everpresence of That in the background of our world, but yet still people are mostly concerned with their ordinary lives. I find https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_(novel) even better, though.

Pondering whether or not I should do more work on my Curio project (mainly simplification and removal of features). In hindsight, I think my main mistake with this project was assuming that the "community" might have something meaningful to contribute to it. So, if anything, I'd mostly reclaim it as something that scratches a personal itch and not anything more than that.

mcepl,
@mcepl@floss.social avatar

I thought that Curio was officially deprecated in favour of Trio. Wasn’t it?

mcepl,

@dabeaz I know there are many pages on the Internet (and that's where I got my impression from) consider Curio as an experiment, which was productized and further developed as Trio. Apparently it isn’t so, but based on that I thought that it was mostly for you as an experiment, perhaps educational project. But perhaps, as the dying Rabbi said, everything is different.

My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?
